I sold a brand new sealed Nintendo switch console, and after receiving it the buyer said they wished to return it because they changed their mind (they got another one). since my listing didnt accept returns and it was inconvenient for me to accept it, i rejected the return request.
fast forward a day or two and the buyer says fair enough but decided to open up the console to check if everything works before he resells. conveniently, he said something was wrong with the joycons and that the screen doesnt turn on/flicker etc. then he tells me he will take me to small claims court if we dont just work together for the return (he offered to return and take a smaller refund to help me pay for fixing it), since ebay cant do anything about it.
what should i do? i asked for video proof and whatnot and hes unable to send it since "hes old and isnt good with technology" and wants to send picture proof of a blank screen??

Even if they did, the results will be the same.
Either give a partial refund or pay to have it returned.

Buyer opened a return request for a reason that allows you to decline the return, which you did.
You are done. Ignore them. You don't care about them or the item any longer.
If they had used a different reason (one that doesn't allow you to decline) then you accept it, pay for return shipping and pray you actually get a Switch back....in any condition.
If they go to their Credit Card, then that's another story...but, as far as what has happened so far, forget about it and ignore them. You are done with eBay and this buyer.

They will allow you to dispute this but you will not win. Under most circumstances, not all, you MUST accept a return on here or you are asking for more trouble than you want to be involved in. The biggest trouble will be your buyer will conveniently run to their payment source and file a chargeback and in those cases the CC company may rule on giving your item to your buyer for free for all your trouble because you have not accepted this return.

Buyers can tell you everything and anything here and it is not a reason to refuse their return request. They beef up the reasons and threaten you with police action blah blah and more blah. Does not matter. Accept the return.

Isn't this the end of the story right here? The remorse return was declined, which was allowed, and which the seller had a right to do. How can another return case be opened? I think the OP should be done here. This is completely different from a return case opened for INAD. I always accept those, even when I believe the buyer is in the wrong, because there really is no choice. Hasn't the buyer missed the opportunity to officially, through Ebay, request a return later for an INAD after the first case was closed?

Which return should be accepted? The buyer originally filed a return for "changed mind." The seller declined it, which the seller had a right to do. I've not seen that a new official return case has been started. Wouldn't any discussion about problems with the device be outside of Ebay's return system at this point? Let's figure the buyer really did wait a little bit, then after the return case was declined, he tried the unit and it didn't work. I'd think all he could do is write to the seller to see if the seller is willing to help. I don't see that there is an official return request through Ebay to make this happen.

I recently had someone try returning 2 dvd players, claiming they didn't work. I know they did, so I told him to kick rocks and I blocked him. A few days later I got a message from ebay telling me they refunded his money at no cost to me
