Got a return coming back mailed 3/11 for a qty of 2 of a item that the buyer claims are defective that I very very seriously doubt are defective so I am not inclined to do anything more than ebay forces me to do but I just wondered how will this end?
I assume that ebay will force the refund if the buyer asks them for help.
It was a ebay label
I was just trying to figure out when I file a lost mail am I the shipper or recipient?

If you paid for the label, you'll be responsible if it gets lost and probably still have to refund.
If the buyer paid for the label and it gets lost, they are responsible.

To clarify, is the item (sold and shipped back by buyer) being returned by USPS lost in the mail?
If so, eBay will force the refund (to the buyer) and since you supplied the label, I would assume you would need to do the missing mail report. Does the package come with any USPS insurance like Priority Mail does. ($100)

Last known, "eBay return service" labels have no insurance.

If the item(s) are not returned back to you, the return will close automatically, in your favor, which will take a while.

If sent priority mail, is the insurance not included on returns? I did not know that.

Return appears to have been shipped back, so seller loses. Will automatically close in buyer's favor.

It sounds like you shipped ground advantage(formerly first class) so that would be the same for return shipping which does have $100 insurance.

It has to show DELIVERED! Too many scam buyers altering labels and showing that they sent it back.

Last I knew, and has been posted numerous times here on the boards. "eBay Return Service" labels do not have insurance. Not sure if there was ever anything posted about Priority changing anything about "Return Service" labels.
ETA...................... but of course the OP can attempt to do a claim to test the waters on that.

If the seller is responsible for the label, then all it need is an "acceptance" scan. From there on out it is on the seller.

This is the correct answer, last I heard from eBay's CS. The buyer may be sending a box of rocks back for all anyone knows. As a seller, you're responsible for the refund/return once the item has been returned to you. This is why you never process a refund until the return shows as "delivered" to you. "Accepted" does not mean you are responsible for anything...yet.
