Got a return coming back mailed 3/11 for a qty of 2 of a item that the buyer claims are defective that I very very seriously doubt are defective so I am not inclined to do anything more than ebay forces me to do but I just wondered how will this end?
I assume that ebay will force the refund if the buyer asks them for help.
It was a ebay label
I was just trying to figure out when I file a lost mail am I the shipper or recipient?

Currently in the same boat. Buyer shipped out return but it seems to be stuck since 3/21

The buyer can track the shipment back. They'll be able to see when it's delivered, and eBay will notify you as well. If they push for a refund before that time, take a screenshot of the tracking info, send it to them with a polite message letting them know their refund will be processed immediately upon receipt of the item.

One thing is certainly for sure, with the way sales have been on eBay (with huge % for PL's) and still no traffic AND USPS losing packages, now is a good time for a very long vacation.

so you are saying that if the buyer opens a case I will not be allowed to voluntarily refund and it will be automatically closed in buyers favor and I will get a unresolved case strike?

Actually that is not correct. If the return label (paid for by the seller) shows an acceptance scan that is all they need. Sad but true.

I just went through this, and was told in no uncertain terms that I should not refund anything until the item was actually delivered to me.
It would make no sense for a seller to be on the hook for an "accepted" package. If an item is returned damaged, a seller would have no recourse if the acceptance scan was adequate for establishing grounds for a refund. I only use eBay labels and I have never sent a penny back to a buyer prior to being notified by eBay that the package showed as delivered to me, and having it in hand.

NO. What I am saying is that the purchaser of the label is ultimately held responsible by eBay once there is an acceptance scan. Unless there has been some recent change in policy "delivery" is not a requirement.
If the buyer purchased the label, then it is all on the buyer to have the "delivered" scan.
You should be able to refund without a strike.
When eBay makes the decision to refund the buyer is above my pay grade.
Not sure if you get a chance to refund if the buyer asks eBay to "step in" to decide.

So many times, we have read that a seller was given that advice just to be followed up with a screaming post about how the "return" item never got delivered and eBay refunded the buyer with the seller's money.

Yes, eBay may refund a buyer for an item, but it's not necessarily on the seller's nickel. If the seller doesn't get the item back, the seller doesn't have to refund the item, but eBay may decide to refund the buyer.
I had a buyer pull some funny stuff with a deck about 18 months ago, attempting to get a refund from me. I never got the deck back, and she did get a refund from eBay, but not a single penny was taken from me and I didn't get a defect.
According to eBay, the seller is on the hook once the item shows as delivered.

Kinda true.
That happens only if the return times out and the buyer doesn't escalate or the buyer doesn't ship it at all.

That’s not accurate @the-hook-and-the-loop . [BTW, there’s likely an equal number of scam sellers who send buyers return labels with wrong info on it (or simply provide buyers with wrong return addresses) … thinking that will avoid their having to refund.]
*** As long as a buyer returns an item using EITHER a shipping label OR an address provided by eBay or the seller … the buyer will be refunded … regardless of whether the item ever reaches the seller. *** [They may have to contact eBay to get the refund, however.]
That said, I seem to recall a thread within the last year where eBay provided a ‘courtesy refund’ to the seller when the package with their return label on it was lost @bashort . I would contact eBay on Social media should that actually happen to you.

I got one recently. The more you sell the more you are likely to get a good USA based CSR to give one out.

They have it on out going packages, but do return shipping labels come with insurance?

Please clarify.
Did the buyer open a return case or is the buyer shipping back at their cost?

That's not for lost packages.
If the carrier claims the returned package is lost, who pays for the shipping label is responsible.
If buyer pays return shipping and it gets lost, buyer is out of luck.
