I started a return on an item that was defective and chose that the item did not fit as the reason. That was because the item was defective. Apparently ebay classified the return as voluntary or the result of my mistake and is requiring me to pay return shipping by purchasing a return shipping label to effectuate the return. I can't contact the seller or ebay to correct this. Ebay will not allow me too. iNSANE. And if I cancel the return and try to start over, I won't be able to do a return, Totally Nuts. ANy advice??

Well, the eBay Money Back Guarantee is iron-clad for buyers when used properly.
Where you botched your attempt was to select 'Doesn't fit' as the reason for the Return request. 'Doesn't fit' is a remorse reason, and with that reason, the buyer pays return shipping. You should have selected 'Item is defective' if the item was defective... and the seller would have picked up return shipping.
No... there's no correcting this one, and no, there are no 'do-overs' with eBay.
- Your next backup would be PayPal (if you went through them), but they'd require that you pay return shipping, too.
- Your last backup would be with your CC (if you went through one), but that would unjustly cost the seller another $20... I say "unjustly", since the seller already honored your request at face value.
You ask for any 'advice'... I'd say let this one play out as you set it up and to learn from the experience. Good luck with your decision. Here's a link you might want to read through. >> eBay Money Back Guarantee policy

Have read of cases where the buyer is able to have an eBay CSR change the reason.
The using "help & contact" to get a call back from CS.
If you go the PP route there is an option to opt into "PayPal paying the return shipping". Opt into that 1st before returning.

I think Pay Pal is doing away with that this month and not letting anyone else sign up.

They will change not received to not as described.
They might change a return to a not received, but I'm not sure about that.
They will not change doesn't fit to defective for good reason because everyone that finds out they have to pay return shipping would be wanting to change the reason to make the seller pay return shipping.

You can't get a do over. You made an error. You will have to pay the return shipping. THe seller will refund. If they are nice, they can send you what you paid to return it but they will need an email address to do that. I am not sure if they can find it since now Ebay blocks all email addresses. maybe you can send it in a note inside of the package.
If you go through paypal, you pay the return shipping too.

Not insane, makes perfect sense. If buyer's have several options to open a return, and some of those do not require free labels, then everyone would request a 'correction' to do it over. You chose wrongly so purchase your return label and send it back for a refund. The item is defective, as you say. Best of luck to you....

I am not sure if they can find it since now Ebay blocks all email addresses.
Members who have been in a transaction, which is the case here, can exchange contact information through eBay Messages.
It's when there is no transaction (yet) that those Messages are Blocked. EBay wants to be sure that they get their fees. And possibly also that the seller is not cheated out of their payment, as a bonus reason.

I would go ahead and just pay for the return shipping and go from there. Make it a lesson learned.
eBay does have a solid MBG, but buyers need to push the correct buttons. Don't know what your return shipping might cost, but it might not be worth your time trying to get eBay to switch it around for you.
