I just got ripped a new one by ebay for a false claim about an item being damaged and not as described. anything wrong with it was mentioned and pictured clearly, buyer knew what he bought, then tried to get me to give a partial refund and said he would eat the loss and throw it away, then proceeded to ship it back without an ebay provided label. Meanwhile, I had 5 different support agents tell me that I am protected and I will win any case and did everything they told me to do to a T. Yet, I still lose the case and then for some reason have to pay 20$ more than what I got from the sale for a return. I just dont understand. Just the biggest crock of crap where the buyers can just take advantage of sellers.

If you had to pay a $20 fee, the buyer went to his cc for a chargeback, Ebay doesnt get involved with that.

Which item was it that had the problem?
You should not have to involve eBay in a transaction. If you do, it usually does not end well as you have learned.
EBay expects sellers to handle transactions without any intervention, period.
Are you saying that the item was returned to You?
EBay has a 30 day Money Back Guarantee for buyers. Sellers have to know the MBG and how to handle returns.

If the words Seller Protection have any impact on your customer service behavior, you are likely to lose more merchandise and or money on returns you handle without Ebay intervention.
PayPal coined the term and funded lots and lots of buyer claims. Those that were not funded by PayPal became credit card chargeback disputes lost by sellers.

Yelp. Usually a $20. charge was the buyer did a dispute with his credit card and you the seller tried to contest the claim. Once the dispute happens it is out of the hands of eBay. Sometimes it best to just refund the buyer.
