Stereo from Italy is defective

I bought a 1980 Kenwood stereo amplifier from Italy but when I got it its not working. It turns on and plays for a couple minutes then starts putting out major distortion.  I don't know if that went through eBay global shipping program or not.  I emailed the seller and sent her a video, to see what recourse she might offer me. I paid $70 for the amp and $75 for shipping. She replied she would offer $20 refund. Should I just start a refund for a defective item?  thanks.

Open a claim as not as described...

I bet seller will just refund you and not send a return label since it cost so much to have it shipped back to Italy.

Heck, it might even cost more in shipping for seller to get it back.

20 bucks for a broken item as a refund...I would ask for the total $70. bucks back.

Yes, file an item not as described case.  You want a full refund.

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

Have you checked on the power supply? Is it wired for European current 220v? Some amplifiers have switches/toggles that allow one to change from 220v to 110v. If it is hard wired for 220v, you could utilize a step-down/step-up (luggage shops sell them) transformer so it will not be underpowered. (Takes 110v and increases to 220v)

YMMV

edit.

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

Hi thanks, I moved the switch to the 110 volt selection before plugging it in. It did work perfectly for about an hour. But it completely quit now, a little music comes through, but 90% distortion.  I'm going to file a claim. I do feel kinda bad for the seller, I know I would hate to take a loss like that.

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

Some more info on the amplifier. It says under condition: USED:  “EXCELLENT AMPLIFIER MADE IN JAPAN, PERFECTLY FUNCTIONING”

But elsewhere at the very bottom of the description it says:

"The legislation in force in the European Union provides that even private individuals are required to provide a guarantee on the objects sold unless such guarantee is explicitly excluded at the time of sale. The object is sold with the formula AS-IS (as is, seen and liked) with the exclusion of any form of guarantee, as required by European legislation. Pursuant to art. 5 paragraph 3c of Legislative Decree 185/99 the buyer cannot exercise the right of withdrawal. As a result, even if the object is proposed as perfectly functional, it is sold "as is", with the explicit exclusion of any form of guarantee, so anyone who makes offers for the object proposed with his offer, accepts, unconditionally, the exclusion of any form of guarantee for the object itself. Anyone who does not agree with the terms set out is asked not to bid. Thank you"

I did not notice that last part until now, and it was in Italian. Can someone advertise something as perfectly working, but then if it does not work, turn around and say, too bad, It worked but even if i said it worked, and now it doesn't work, you have no recourse?

@train_slide_central

Well this is the US board and those are EU laws so most of us aren't exactly familiar with them.

Perhaps more people will be on the UK community?

Yeah, that is a tough one but that comes with the territory of owning a vintage amp. IMHO Stuff breaks down and specs drift over time. Depending on the value/purchase it still may be worth having a tech check it out.  Could be a simple capacitor fix.

What model was the Kenwood?

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

It is a KENWOOD KA-60.. Not a very common amplifier,  it's probably capacitors.  I guess maybe I'll try for a refund and see what happens? IDK

I don't think the UK is part of the EU.

I thought they might be more familiar with those laws on that side of the pond..

That's all.

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

I asked Grok, and it says eBay rules where you place the order take precedent over the rules where the item is listed.

Re: Stereo from Italy is defective

I understand that, but that's like saying we in the USA know about rules in Canada and Mexico.
