Seller request

I purchased smoke alarms a couple of weeks ago. They just started "faulting" last week. They came in a 2-pk, have a 10-yr warranty, and they are around 2 yrs old.  I messaged the seller who said, "maybe it's the battery." But you'd have to take apart the smoke detectors just to get to the battery which is supposed to last for 10yrs but may not be replaceable. I said it wasn't a good idea, may void ebay money back guarantee. Then they asked me to send video to their phone number to "prove" they are faulty and that I'd get a full refund. I showed them the "Off ebay contact or payment." They swore to me that they will accomodate me and refund me. I came here for "suggestions". *Note..this is listed under Returns, but I'm not sure. Thanks, Linda

Re: Seller request

@idragonflyi,

You're right, the batteries in those alarms are not changeable. One of the selling points: "Never change a battery". From the listing pictures:

Unfortunately, as it says in your screenshot, the item was delivered on June 21 and the return window closed on July 21. That means that the eMBG has expired. You get up to 30 days after delivery to open an MBG case. After that time frame, you can contact the seller and ask for a return, but they are not required to by eBay policy. eBay can't help you with this because it is too late, but the seller has offered to help.

I presume that you are getting the amber light that indicates a system fault, according to the box. Take a picture of that, and send it to the seller in the return request on eBay. See what they do then. The seller said they would refund you if you provided evidence. A picture showing the fault condition is all that is needed to do that. A video would not add anything else.

I don't know of any retail store that would accept a return after 30 days. That's what the manufacturer's warranty is for. You should reach out to Kidde and see what they recommend in this situation. The box says they are warranted for 10 years by Kidde. Some companies won't honor a warranty for a third-party sales (like eBay) but some will. They may be able to trouble shoot them and help you get them working, they may offer a replacement, they may not help. Its worth a try.

If the seller doesn't refund you and if Kidde can't help, then you can file a payment dispute with PayPal or with your credit card, in that order if necessary.

Re: Seller request

Do you have a listing number of the item you purchased?

Re: Seller request

The eBay MBG does not require you to send videos to the seller.

The eBay MBG gives you 30 days from receipt to return the item.

Go to the item in your purchase history and request a return.

Read the MBG.

Just as a side note, most items on eBay do not have a manufactured warranty. Unless you are purchasing from a retailer or purchase an outside warranty.

Re: Seller request

I haven't seen one that you had to take apart to change the battery.

Most, the cover just snaps off and the battery is right there.

The smoke alarm might have a 10 year warranty, but the batteries don't last that long.

If they are two years old, the batteries probably need replaced.

Have a great day.

Re: Seller request

WOW. None of these actually answered my question about how to respond to the seller. ☹️ Thanks.

Was there instructions on how to replace the batteries?

I wouldn't worry about the warranty, most manufactures don't stand behind them on items bought on Ebay.

Have a great day.

Re: Seller request

Was looking for the item number to see how it was described. Brand New vs Used. However lacemaker has addressed the issue you now have with you being outside of the Ebay MBG. If you think the seller is not being responsive to your complaint, i would stop contacting them and open up a charge dispute with your bank/credit card (paypal). Eventually that should resolve the issue of refunding you although it may take a little time.

That being said, i would suggest buying something like this locally from a store that does sell them as Brand New. Ebay is littered with many that sell items listed as Brand New that appear to have all the perks of what one would have if purchased from a authorized retailer. Sellers generally do not disclose and buyers like yourselves end up realizing this after the 30 day MBG expires.

-Good luck
