Paid $19.19 for small spool of fishing line. It arrived in wrong color AND when I tied to use it, it broke like thread. Seller agreed to accept return and send a label. No label arrived. Then I git a notice from eBay telling me that "We were unable to get a free return shipping label because it is bulky." That is false. Item fits it the palm of my hand. Post office wants about $18.00 to ship the item back to seller in china - so I would pay as much to ship as the refund amount! eBay also warns "If you do not send the item, we might close your return and you might not receive a refund." What can I do now?

eBay isn't sending those messages... maybe your seller is. You'll need to open a Return claim. Start by going to your Purchase History and press the big, blue 'Return this item' button. Cite that the product was 'Not as Described' (or whatever the verbiage), Confirm and Submit.
Your seller is on the line for return shipping cost. Keep an eye on the case timeline and escalate it to eBay when the case allows, if the seller doesn't hold up his end.
Here's the Money Back Guarantee. It's iron-clad for buyers when used properly. Plus, it's automated... you don't have to contact the seller anymore at all. Good luck. >> eBay Money Back Guarantee policy

I did file a case with eBay. When I go to Purchase History, it's sends me to the message I described. It makes to excuse re: bulk in a red box and then instructs to return the item at my own expense, giving me until April 10 to return the item or forfeit.

Reason was defective product. I do not have a FB account and don't want one. Must be a way to do this directly on eBay, no?

Return an item for a refund | eBay
File it as item not as described and let eBay run with it.
Respond promptly to all eBay case emails. If like my China return, the seller will not be able to provide the shipping label.
When you can, escalate the case to eBay. The seller in my instance offered a % back, but if the item is not as described, then no, you don't want a discount, you want a refund.
When the case closes you will receive a full refund.

Actually no, there isn't. You must leave a private message here for eBay on Facebook, to get action like this:
You're just contacting eBay @ospreyspirit not opening a Facebook account to make friends, post photos, or tell a joke.

Discovered that (Chinese) seller did send a return label via eBay, but it is made out to my address instead of the seller's. What can I do about that?

1. If that return label has a tracking number,
2. and that tracking number is shown on the return details page,
3. when your item mailed with that label shows Delivered ANYWHERE, you'll get your refund.

Once you get your refund, try to NOT buy from Chinese sellers. 99% of the items are pure manure. You can see how the fishing thread broke. Luckily it did not break while you were fishing and had a nice big fish on the hook. Stick with sellers in the USA. A sign of a crappy item is if the price is alot cheaper than what you find in your local Walmart or other store that sells fishing supplies, then it's probably counterfeit or of very poor quality.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now. A 20-something dollar water tester... It arrived defective right out of the box. The digits don't even display properly, and it's just a piece of junk. I contact the seller and tell them that I need to return it because it's defective, and they make me jump through hoops for days telling me I need to take it apart myself and troubleshoot it and everything else... Finally enough time elapsed that eBay told me to go ahead and return it, and then when I try and open the return claim to print the label I'm greeted with the big red box at the top... "We were unable to get a free return shipping label because it is bulky." Nonsense. The stupid piece of crap weighs less than a pound and easily fits inside of a bubble mailer. I have a suspicion that the seller intentionally listed the weight of the item in the listing as something excessive like a hundred pounds or more, and then provided free shipping knowing that there's a loophole in the return system in which eBay will not provide free return labels on bulky items... I guess. So it appears that I'm going to have to reach out to eBay directly and see what they're willing to do. I can't even create my own label even if I wanted to because the return address that they provided to me in the return claim is fake as well.
