I recently sold (under a different account) a vintage pen. The buyer has high feedback, including buying and selling similar pens, and seemed reputable. The buyer wanted to return the pen because of minor damage that I had not noticed.
I had sent the pen in a small box. The buyer returned the pen in a used bubble envelope.
When I opened the envelope, it was empty, except for a rolled up piece of bubble wrap that was open on the ends. At first I thought this was a "scam" of returning an empty package, but noticed a rip at the end of the envelope. This rip had been there when the pen was sent because it had been covered with a small piece of tape, which had mostly fallen off. This was a large heavy metal pen. I have another identical one, which I slid into the roll of bubble wrap and placed back in the envelope. Lightly shaking the envelope resulted in the pen sliding out of the hole.
It appears this pen has been lost somewhere in transit due to the buyer's poor packing. I assume I am still required to refund the buyer for this? I don't know why they wouldn't use the same box I used to send it back to me.
