I started the return process for a defective item. The seller agreed to the return; however, he cannot prepare the shipping labels. eBay gave me eight days to ship the item. Otherwise, the claim will be closed. After two days, I shipped the item and provided the shipping tracking number. The seller should pay the shipping return cost; however, the seller sent me a note to keep the thing and refunded me the initial cost. I ended up spending the cost of the return, and I was unable to find a way to contact eBay for this item. For eBay, the refund is completed, and the case is closed.
It sounds like a bug in the system. The customer is forced to ship the item even if the seller cannot provide shipping labels. When the item is shipped seller refund the article, and the case is automatically closed. Hence the seller pays the return shipping.

If you opened an item not as described case, the seller is required to either send you a prepaid return label or reimburse you in advance for the cost of return shipping if he wants his item back.
If he doesn't do that, eBay usually refunds you from the seller's funds and lets you keep the item.
If you returned the item on your dime instead of waiting for that return shipping label, then it's doubtful that there is any way to be refunded what you spent to return.
It is not a bug in the system. There is no way the seller can avoid sending you the return label or reimbursing you in advance for the return shipping. But it sounds like you went ahead and returned without waiting for the label? The customer is NOT forced to return if the seller cannot cover the cost of return shipping.

Did you actually open a MBG case? If so the seller would have had to provide a label.

Thanks for you reply, In the process eBay communicated that the "seller XXX let us know that they can't buy a return shipping label", nothing more than getting money in advanced "now i know", I never returned an item so new buyers will face similar problem. The process should be clearer and include features that are missing. The user should be able :
1 - Insert details if labels are provided or not
2 - In case of no labels, insert the return cost (point to the link of the cost)
3 - Provide an option to the seller to accept or refuse the return
I am convinced that the process is very basic (similar to the ones back to the 90s) where the process of other sites like Amazon is complete and efficient.

Class action, I am sure we are not alone????
I will send a certified letter of demand to eBay cooperate legal agent then file a Federal lawsuit for fraud!!

sorry that's not true, I was directed by eBay to return and did. Seller is responsible for costs but has not paid anything. Seller opened another case after item was returned shipped to just pay refund and automatically closed my return.

You are in Switzerland and only sellers from your country can provide you with a return label. For returns to another country the seller is still responsible for return shipping costs. You must give them your PayPal address so they can send you money up front. If they don't you have to let eBay know the seller hasn't provided return shipping costs and eBay would then refund and tell you that you don't have to return it.

That's true fab_finds4u , the problem is that eBay puts pressure on buyers to ship the item in a short time. Sellers sometimes won't answer in two or three days, and i can not find a way to talk to eBay. eBay service outside Us is ridiculous.

You are right if the buyer is in the US, it differs for international customers 😞
