I’m trying to return a defective item and I contacted ebay with a description of the issue prior to the return shipping date. However, the the return shipping date will pass within the time the seller has to respond. Will I still be able to return the item?

You have 30 days from delivery to file a ‘return request’. If the seller has not provided a prepaid shipping label within 3 business days of your filing … then you need to go back to request and ask eBay to step in.
[It isn’t clear to me what you are calling a ‘return shipping date’. That usually refers to the date the buyer must ship the item by …. AFTER having received the return shipping label from the seller or eBay. You seem to be using the term differently.]

Thank you! I have filed a ‘return request’ prior to the 30 days, but that 30day period will run out during the three day period, but I think I have covered myself. Appreciate your response.

You're good timewise, since you filed the return request on time. The only other timelines to keep in mind:
- You need to ask eBay to step in before 20 days from filing. Otherwise the case will 'time out'.
- You will need to ship the item back within the time limit you're given after you've been sent a shipping label. [That will be at least 5 days. eBay has extended the time since the pandemic begun.]
