I sold an item to an ebayer in Australia and shipped it through ebay International Shipping program. I recently received a return request as wrong item sent. I am getting conflicting messages on how to proceed or even if I need to proceed. A message is shown when I view the order that a return is progress and is being handled by ebay and no action is necessary. But then I also receive messages in ebay messages that I need to take action on this return by Jan 09. I am 100% positive that the item is correct and the purchaser purchased the wrong item for his machine but that is beside the point. But because of this I'm also concerned that if I end up having to pay all the shipping charges it may exceed the value of the part itself. So can I determine how much I will be out in return shipping?

That's correct, eBay handles those returns, either sending a prepaid return label or just refunding outright. Then eBay liquidates the item and you don't get it back. eBay is just keeping you informed, until resolution.

If you shipped using eBay International Shipping (EIS), then the initial notice that you had received about eBay handling the return is correct, and there is nothing further for you to do.
However -- if you used the old eBay International Standard Shipping, that may be a different matter.
After the sale, did you ship the item to Illinois, or did you first fill out a customs form?
If you filled out a customs form, you apparently are still using eBay International Standard Shipping.
If you simply mailed the item to Illinois (without filling out a customs form), then you are using eBay International Shipping -- which will handle any issues.

That was a solid explanation.
