This is a long post. Please bear with me. I placed a Sony CD changer on my watchlist. Shortly thereafter, I received an offer from the seller. There were several negative feedbacks left for this seller, so I first messaged him to see how he would respond. He answered promptly and said he would ship the unit -- well packed and double boxed -- the day following payment. I felt reassured, so I accepted his offer and immediately paid. I noticed that the seller did not ship when promised, so I messaged him. He then shipped. Unboxing revealed serious problems. (1) The seller listed the unit as a particular model number. I looked up a manual for that model before purchasing, so my purchase was based on that model number. But the seller had transposed numbers, and this was a completely different model, though the front of both units looked similar. (2) Normally, that would not be an issue, but this Sony changer was made to be part of a particular system. It can ONLY be used with one Sony receiver, a receiver I don't own. It has no power cord attached and gets its power from the receiver via a weird proprietary cord. This cord was NOT included in the sale. (3) The seller did NOT disclose any of this information in his description. Further, I could not determine the model number mistake from his photos because they were not clear enough to show the model number. So this Sony CD changer is basically a giant paperweight for me. I messaged the seller to explain the issues (not all of which were immediately clear to me until later). He replied that he was on his way out of town to a funeral and would not be back for another week. He would message me as soon as he returned to "explain." I chose to give him the benefit of the doubt and said I would wait and expressed my condolences. It was after this that I discovered the story behind this model and the necessity for a specific receiver and special cord, so I messaged him again to explain everything, showing pictures, in case he was in the dark. He messaged me the following: "I have matching receiver." Well, this shed a whole new light on the situation! I knew then that I was not dealing with someone who was operating in good faith. I waited until the week had passed, since I already said I would. But the following day came and went with no message from the seller. So the next day I tried to file a report with ebay. However, the only pertinent option I found was to return the item, so I clicked through that and explained my reasons. In my twenty years on ebay, I've never done this, so I didn't know what to expect. However, I was told to return the item by a certain date; then I could get my refund. But here's my problem -- I don't want to incur the cost of shipping this unit back to the seller, and I don't believe I should have to. I would only be returning it because the seller did not describe the item accurately and was deceptive with me. I've already been cheated out of getting the unit that I purchased. Must I be cheated out of the cost of shipping just to get my refund? This seems grossly unfair. I have looked and looked and can find no other way to contact ebay to resolve this problem. I apologize for the detailed post, but I wanted to tell the whole story. Can anyone help me or point me in a better direction? TIA!!

I should add that in my explanation to ebay, I requested a full refund, plus the cost of shipping so that I can return the unit. Considering how I was treated by the seller, I believe he should bear the cost of return shipping, but I am more than willing to box the unit back up and ship it to him.

Well... you can't request a refund with eBay, so I hope that you mean you've opened a Return request. If so, the seller will refund you.
Tell us... what reason did you cite in the request? If it was for a 'Not as Described' reason, the seller will have to provide you with a return shipping label. Once it's returned, you'll be refunded. If the seller does not issue a label, you can escalate the case to eBay (keep an eye on the timeline) and will be refunded without return.
The MBG is iron-clad when used properly. Here's the whole deal... eBay Money Back Guarantee policy

Paragraghs!
eBay’s Money Back Guarantee is only for thirty days. This transaction was months ago.
When an item arrives not as described open a return. There is only 30 days to file, don’t allow the seller to string you along with false hope.
I also suggest picking better sellers. I would have expected a bad seller to tell you anything you wanted to hear. A reputable seller would have blocked you from purchasing.
All that negative feedback was a warning.
Now the seller no longer a registered user. You might be successful if you contact eBay for business on face book. Explain you purchased an item, received something different and the seller is no longer registered. Again, time is not on your side here, the transaction was long ago.

Then you you should have exercised good faith @thelmalouofmayberry with the reason why are you returning?
Why did you choose the incorrect reason instead, for which you have to pay return shipping yourself?

Yes, I it was a return request. Sorry if I didn't make that clear. And I did cite "not as described." There was something about printing out a label, but it was not stated that the shipping would be prepaid by the seller. That's why I assumed I'd be responsible. I will have to go back to that and try it. I was afraid to move forward, not knowing what I was getting into. I'll update on what I find out. Thanks for your input!

No, I paid for the item Oct. 30th, and it arrived on Nov. 8th. Is it 30 days from purchase or date of arrival? I should still be in that window. You're right about avoiding the seller. I was too hopeful and, I suppose, too trusting.

I didn't do screen shots when I was going through the process, but I think I chose "doesn't match description or photos." I thought this was more accurate since apparently the seller sent me what was in the photos but not the item as described or as listed in the title. As I said, I've never had to take this step in my twenty years on ebay, so I was doing what I thought was right.

Oh, yikes. So I just went back to my request details and clicked on "print label." It says, "Return shipping is free!" I feel like an idiot!! I guess now if I go ahead and use the label to return the unit, then the seller will refund me, right? I'm sorry for wasting my time and yours!

Super glad to hear it! Do not talk to the seller again @thelmalouofmayberry and yes, affix the label and send it back.
It's OK if you got a First Class Return Service label. It's a return service good for up to 70 pounds, a placeholder label that will charge eBay the Permit Holder the correct postage after it is weighed and measured.
The seller has 2 business days to voluntarily refund after it is delivered back. After that, come back and click Ask eBay to step in, and eBay will force a full refund. Again, don't talk to the seller, just return and wait.

Well, welcome! Come sit by me!
I'm sorry for wasting my time and yours!
Time is never wasted if a solution to your issue is found... nobody can take that from you.
I remember my grandma saying, "Experience is something you need just before you get it." Still applies. 😊

I was thinking of reaching out to the seller one last time, but I will take your advice and not do so. Thanks for the additional information. I appreciate your help!

I don't believe you'd be able to contact the seller since they're suspended. I'm pretty sure ebay blocks the contact.
For future purchases, please check all sellers' feedback before making offers. Had you done that in this case, you probably would have looked for another seller.
