I purchased a book that was described as "like new", however it was not like new. It smelled tremendously of cigarette smoke, the pages were curled and dirty. The seller had used a stock photo. I used the return feature and selected that the item was not as advertised or pictured. Ebay immediately issued me the free return label. I returned it immediately, and the seller has had the item back now for 5 days but not has not refunded my money. I am confused if ebay automatically takes care of the getting me the refund since it is covered by the ebay guarantee, or if I am supposed to ask the seller to refund the money. At this point, I have not yet been in contact with the seller. Do I contact the seller, or try to get ebay to step in?

The seller has two days to issue the refund after they receive it back.
Go to the case and see if you can ask Ebay to step in.

The drop-down is not showing me an option to ask ebay to step in. How can I to contact them?

There isn’t a drop down menu, you need go to the return case it will say click here to ask eBay to step in or similar verbiage.

It takes a couple of days to a billing period to show up on your end. If you can't ask eBay to step in maybe it's been refunded.
Whatever you do don't let another 7 days go by without getting eBay's help. The case will close with no refund automatically 10 days after the date the seller must refund you by unless you asked for help before then.

Refund would be returned on the way you paid for it. If a credit card it does take some time. And nothing is done on the weekend...only business days. It does not usually show up in "available funds" or "processing funds". It will show up on a credit card or debit card banking as a refund after a few business days.

If you go into the return case, does the tracking show delivered in the return case? That is where you should find the "ask eBay to step in " option if it is 3 days past the delivery date.

In the return details, it shows delivered to the sender on Aug. 17. and that I should be refunded by Aug. 21. Then it says something to the effect of waiting the sellers response. There is no info on how to contact ebay.

@blackdirtprairie yep, like Ken says, check it on Tuesday.
These return cases are automated by the calender.

I just received email notification that the seller had issued my refund. Thanks much to taking time to help me learn the deeper ins-and-outs of eBay.
