EBAYs frustrating claims handling

I won an auction on EBAY for a signed Kobe Bryant Jersey that was supposed to be a genuine jersey as it was advertised as PSA verified. I paid $1839.59 for the jersey. Upon receiving it, I took it to JSA and Beckett authentication services and both told me it was not authentic, that they would not authenticate the item, nor did they think it was a genuine PSA certification.

I notified the seller of the issue and requested a return for a refund. The seller was not happy about it, but said Ok, return the item and I will release a refund. I then requested the refund from EBAY but did not hear back from them. After 3 days I called EBAY and they said they were not sure what was holding it up but that the shipping label was likely just processing, and I was told I have the option of using my own label, but to make sure it had a tracking number. The next day I still did not have a return label from EBAY, so I shipped it out via USPS and got a tracking number. I immediately entered the tracking number into the EBAY website so they could track the item.

After 2 weeks, I received no communication from EBAY and no refund. I called and asked again, and this time I was told they could not verify the item was delivered. I gave them the tracking information and was told “this should result in a refund and I should wait longer for it to be issued”. I called again 2 days later and was told by a different EBAY representative that I did what I needed to do, but the refund was now in a review process and would take another 48 hours. After a 5 days, EBAY tells me they have closed the refund case and will not issue a refund as they could not verify the tracking number or that it was delivered. I was furious about this and provided the tracking number, and was then told that EBAY requires a signature for items over $750.  This was not communicated (although I am sure it is in fine print somewhere in their long list of rules), but this is besides the point as the seller received the item. EBAY said they could not verify this, so I messaged the seller. He did not respond to my first several messages asking for a verification date he received the return. After multiple attempts to reach him with no response, I notified him I would be giving him a bad rating and would be filing a complaint. He then reached back out with “I don’t know what you’re talking about, you got your money, you won the case, all good”. This is because he had not received the funds from EBAY yet, so he thought there was no problem as he had the jersey and thought I had the money. This conversation is attached.

I filed an appeals case with EBAY and received an email stating” Upon checking, the item appears to be delivered to Tacoma Washinton”

They then close the appeal and state “you have requested a return from the seller, but for us to confirm that the item was delivered, we requested signature confirmation that the item was received at the sellers address. We sent an email to you on August 6th 2024, but we have not received proof of that. We are closing the case in the sellers favor.”

They requested a signature 19 days after I shipped the item back, and 15 days after the seller received it.

I understand they have policies, but these policies are vague and are not conveyed clearly when speaking with phone representatives. EBAY also did not communicate with a shipping label so that added to the confusion. If the seller received the item, the signature (just because its in their policy) should not be holding up this refund, as the item showed delivered to the correct address…so even a scribbled signature does not verify the actual seller was the receiving person at that address.

EBAY did not investigate this thoroughly which is evident by the comments made by different members of their team. There is no number to call the appeal dept and they say they do not do call backs. Their decision is final and was not explained very thoroughly and then when I replied back with questions like, did the seller deny receiving the item? Have the funds been released to the seller already?, etc….the appeals dept ghosted me and has not replied to any of the 4 emails I have sent to them asking for a better explanation.

This is the most unprofessional conduct I have ever seen in customer service, and was surprising coming from such a large company, but it is apparent now that customer service is NOT on their priority list.

Anyone else have issues with EBAY claims like this?
