I am asking this question from both sides of the point.
I have sold an item, the buyer requested a return, I explained he might have a compatibility issue, he didn't reply, so I accepted the return 48 Hrs later. He has not replied to subsequent messages and the case continues to stay open, weeks after I accepted the return. He has not used the supplied return label and the item has not been returned. I suspect he verified the compatibility issue and corrected it, but I could not understand why he didn't cancel the return request?!
Now, I have just purchased something and did the exact same thing as my buyer did.
I double checked an item I purchased, and it was faulty both times.
I opened a return, the seller accepted it, and just before I shipped it back I found that it was a compatibility issue and the item was fine.
I apologised to my seller and went to cancel the request, only to find that after the seller accepts the request to return THERE IS NO OPTION TO CANCEL THE RETURN REQUEST ON THE ITEM RETURN PAGE!
So, that's why my buyer has not cancelled the return he opened!
Why does the radio button for "Close This Return" disappear if the return request is accepted by the seller?
How long does a seller have to wait until funds for a sale are freed up - if the buyer doesn't return the item?
Please, can someone at eBay look into this obvious error in the system and correct it!

The link to close your return request with the seller @gpro69 is at the lower left corner of the right-hand column on the desktop version of the return details page.
But if it's not there, you can build your own link, even after the request has been escalated to a case. Just replace the XXX with your 10-digit return ID, which begins with the digit 5, and paste that into a web browser (and the https, etc. will automatically prefix):
ebay.com/res/Case/Close?id=XXX
You can test this with any active request or case, because it still won't close till after you confirm a reason on that page.

What does it say under 'Returns' in your Seller Hub/Orders page?

I find that when a buyer does not send an item back, the return closes itself in about 3 weeks or so. I suppose that is when the funds are released.
Don't know why you are not seeing a close return button from the buyer side.

I have no seller hub. I'm a buyer. There is no hub?
