Hello, I sold a rather high value at the end of March. The item was received by the buyer on April 5th.
The next day, I receive a video and pictures claiming that two of the items included in the package were missing and that the box appears to have been tampered with. It is very obvious to me based on how I packed it that the contents were messed with somehow.
Anyways, I contact FedEx and file a claim, they come back and say there is no evidence of tampering on their end.
So buyer requests a return, and I accept, send the shipping label to them. They do not mail the return, but they open a case claiming item not as described. Still buyer does not return item, and is asking for me to send them a partial refund or resend the missing items.
The case is closed, my funds are released, and 4 days later the buyer mails the item back to me. I see that it will be delivered to me tomorrow.
What should I do in this situation? It is a bit concerning given the value of the item, plus it has been over a month, who knows if the buyer has used the item, and whether it is in the same condition or not. Do I need to worry about chargebacks or eBay reopening the case?

Actually, the package is missing one of the items the buyer said they received.
The buyer said they received three items in the box, and was missing two items.
Now I received only two items and am missing something they claimed they received.
I send them a partial refund: total - missing items price.

Refuse the box.

Do you think it's right to keep the item and their money?
Why don't we ever ask buyers that?

I did not refuse.
The contents contained the items the buyer said they received minus one additional item.
So in total, I sent them 5 items, they said 2 were missing, so they had 3 items in their possession.
Upon receipt of the return, I am left with only 2 items - So what happened to that other item they said they received?
They sent me a video of them unboxing it and showed the item that I am now missing, how is this not shady?
Of course they appealed the partial refund

Can you share @customcomputers158 a redacted screenshot?
- The case already closed
- The buyer returned only 2 of 5 items
- You issued a partial refund, something like this:
1. The buyer asked eBay to step in
-- on a case that had already closed?
2. You were notified -- were you notified?
-- that the buyer has appealed your partial refund

1. I talked with someone on the phone and they said that the case was not closed because the buyer shipped the item, even though I got a notification saying it was closed.
2. I was not notified - The rep on the phone told me they had appealed it. I called them again after I refunded.
I am not sure how to get a screenshot like that. It does say I issued a full refund, but I did not.

I did just get confirmation from a rep on the phone that eBay covered the rest of the return, and the case is closed.
I am fairly certain the buyer just got a free lens and adapter, but who know, this whole thing has been so strange.

Perhaps you deducted $925 from the refund @customcomputers158 for the unreturned lens and adapter, which eBay itself then paid the buyer that amount -- is that what happened?

Yes I think that is what happened, since I used the partial refund tool.

If you ended up at 10% to 50%, that is how the system is designed as a TRS with 30 day returns.
