Another first for me. I sold a DVD VCR combo player. I actually even gave the buyer a deal on it since he asked. I end up getting a return requested because “VCR doesn’t work….door is broken.” I can tell the buyer himself damaged the item and then opened the return. I do see that I can report a problem and deduct from what he would get back, but I didn’t know if that was the best course of action.

Well... this would be a time when I could very well discount the refund upon Return. After all, you're a TRS and offer 30-Day (Buyer pays) Returns. It's one of the last seller protections left, and in my opinion, it's your best course of action to use it.
Good luck to you moving forward.

No sorry, but not much you can do in this situation. This platform always favors the buyer in a dispute. Buyer only has to deny they damaged the door and any case will be in their favor. You sold a used player so it will be on the buyer's side. Sellers can only deduct partial on damaged returns when they are TRS and offer free returns, which you did not on this transaction. Your best bet is to accept the return and refund once you get the player back. It happens sometimes when selling online. Best of luck to you....

An item is returned after it was used or damaged by the buyer
Sellers who offer free returns and who are not Below Standard are eligible for this protection
You can deduct up to 50% from the refund to recover the lost value of the item
We will take care of any issues directly with the buyer for you, including removing any negative and neutral feedback, defects, and open cases in service metrics
If we are asked to step in and help, you will no longer be able to issue a partial refund to the buyer.

Do you want a broken combo player back?
Is shipping two ways going to put you further in the hole?
If you do get to make a deduction you can also decline to refund the original shipping.
