Authenticated Item Return - Item is defective???

Just curious if any others out there have faced this issue, and if so, what came of it.  Sent a jewelry item off to be authenticated, it passed with no issue and went on to the buyer.  Buyer has it a week, and then opens a return with reason "item doesn't work or is defective".  In the buyers notes she left the comment of one of the diamonds not sparkling enough for her taste.  I accept returns, so my issue is the reason and the defect it carries with it.  I was under the impression one of the purposes of the Authentication Program was to protect sellers against this type of return once the item is authenticated.

For now the item is headed back to the authentication program to be re-authenticated... And then back to me.  I've talked with eBay for Business on Facebook, and the csr was pretty dismissive of the issue.  "You accept returns, we can't change the reason she used."

So...  Anyone else out there with a similar issue?  What was the end result?

This could be interesting. The item is being returned to be re-authenticated before you get it. Wouldn't it be strange if the buyer sends an empty box back to be re-authenticated.

I thought all sales were final after being authenticated and mailed to the buyer...guess I was wrong.

Re: Authenticated Item Return - Item is defective???

OMG did we have the same customer? I had a very expensive gold and Diamond bracelet that was purchased the end of April. The buyer was very slow to pay. I shipped it immediately after payment to the authentication people, and it passed quickly. It was a gorgeous Roberto Coin 18K piece. Within 1 hour after receipt this buyer opened a Not as described case..attached pictures of the bracelet upside down, so you could not see the diamonds. Never once did she respond to any emails I sent, and my funds have been on hold. Finally today it has been sent FedEx to the authentication people. I have been assured that they will examine it and return it to me. I purchased this from a well known business , and am not sure what this persons motive or agenda is, but no doubt a thief. I will add any information as this progresses. I told the people at ebay that are in charge of this authentication process..that any item that has been authenticated should only be allowed to be returned for reason like , I didn’t like it..etc. I have a full refund , no questions ask. Seriously I think we could have dealt with the same buyer.

Just because you use the service does not mean buyers cannot request a return, tell you it is fake and all the other things buyers can do with a sale. They do need to return the merch to the authenticator and They CAN VOUCH FOR A return of a piece of junk vs your expensive item and then deny the refund. But, the customer can still go to their payment source and do a chargeback no matter what. Then you have to see if ebay can send a proper rebuttal to the payment institution to stop the scammer.

When you are dealing with very high end customers you are going to get some that are going to be very picky about what they spend a huge bankroll for. It would go with this territory.

It's not about the return itself, but the reasoning.  An item being "defective" kinda goes against the whole point of it just being authenticated days earlier.   Fun fact for ya though, "high end" items and those who buy them are much easier to deal with than lower end items.  The chances of a complaint or return for a $50 ring is much higher than a $500 or $5000 ring.

Glad to hear that it is less of a hassle. Yes, I agree, the defective thing is the wrong reason for the return.

100% correct.  The honest person doesn’t have to lie about the reason for a return.  They could return it for any reason that is why we have 30 day returns. There is no reason why anyone would make up a story when you have a liberal return policy unless they were dishonest.

It's easy to understand why. Just do the math.

There are 200 buyers of the cheap $50 ring. But only 2 buyers of the expensive $5,000 ring.

So if for example half (50%) of the buyers complain or return, there are

-- 100 complaints/returns of the $50 ring

-- but only 1 complaint/return of the $5,000 ring.

That was not my point.  Take 100 $50 transactions, and 100 $5000 transactions.  The $50 transactions will have a much higher rate of issues.  It can be more spread out too.  $5 transactions will have a much higher rate of buyer issues than the $50 transactions.
