Am I wrong about eBay returns?

Sep 28 I sold an item on eBay. Right away the buyer sent 3 messages trying to get me to lower the shipping charges. I didn't.
Oct. 17 He tells me that the item was damaged and wanted me to send a 50% refund to settle. I told him to return for a FULL refund. He said he would return AFTER I sent refund. I didn't.
Oct. 19 he said he had "fixed" the item and to go ahead and send positive feedback. Smelling a rat I told him to send feedback first. He then said to send him another item to settle up. I didn't.
Oct. 20 he said he wanted to go ahead and get a refund as he was tired of messing with me. I said PLEASE send item back for a full refund.
Then he sends me negative feedback for not refunding, which I saw coming. Am I wrong for not refunding first?

Re: Am I wrong about eBay returns?

Absolutely not ... You're doing a perfect job

And as for negative feedback, talk to eBay, there are ways to remove it, because the feedback content is nonsense; there was never a Case for refund!

Re: Am I wrong about eBay returns?

Well, the buyer won (of course). He demanded that I refund money BEFORE he would return item. Then he sent negative feedback when I wouldn't. eBay sided with him. He never did return the item. I am convinced he just wanted to get it free! Contacting eBay about the negative feedback did no good.

Re: Am I wrong about eBay returns?

Back to square one! Buyer winning the case may encourage him to send the item back. If he didn't send the item back, then it seems you refunded too soon

Rules are; item comes back, then refund is issued. Unless something else is going on here

Re: Am I wrong about eBay returns?

What are you even talking about? Buyer never opened a case. Seller never refunded.

"Well, the buyer won (of course)..."

Obviously, O P is talking about something, I assume, Buyer won the case

@7thbeatle  Just leave the neg stand - your reply was great, shows the buyer as the fool, not you and you got to keep the funds.

Your reply also stays on the buyers feedback which is almost as good as being able to leave them a negative. I mean, reading that reply, no reasonable future buyer would expect a refund unless the item is returned.

Should have stopped there and cancelled.
