This has been happening since 2017. I see complaints dating back to then. Really Ebay???? This is the most idiotic "feature" ever.

It is very annoying.
To fix, it is an ebay setting. At the top of the auction page, same line as All Listing, Buy it now, and Shipping line, select the 3 line thing on the right by the sorting drop down. Select customize, a new window will open "Customize your search" Go down to the Open item page in line and change the selection from new tab to Same tab and hit the Apply changes button.

This is how you help Ebay, you need to desperately work on your customer service.

I apologize if this may have been addressed already. but, if you look next to wear you change how you sort items, you'll see a drop-down menu with three lines, if you click that it will open a drop-down that says customize. open that and you can select "open item page in : new tab."
I hope this helps, the fix wasn't intuitive or obvious, and was a very frustrating "feature". I actually contacted customer support via chat. I left the chat when they asked if I was trying to view something I intended to buy....

Thank you so much!
This had bothered me each time I browse at eBay, and your solution fixed the problem. Very much appreciated.

It worked perfectly for me! Thanks for making this add-on available. It will save me plenty of time and frustration. I don't know why it works for some and not others, but for me, it worked fantastically! Thanks!

This has been going on for years...too long to be an accident. It's done on purpose: most likely so you don't get distracted by an item, click away from the item you were interested in and were thinking of buying but have now forgotten about.
This way, when you're closing the tabs, you will see that item again.
It's very insulting on the part of eBay.

Unfortunately, I get no such option, on Chrome or Safari.
I only get the option for Gallery or List view.
