I placed an order for an item, but the confirmation showed a different item. The order page was for a complete Lego set and had multiple pictures of the Lego set and box. After placing the order the confirmation said that the order was only for a single Lego figure, and there was only one item picture. It seems like a scam but I don't know how a seller could even do this - it must be a problem with eBay.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Did the page you purchased from look something like this?
That is an eBay product page, and the item you purchased was incorrectly associated with that page.
You can see this in this screenshot.
You should never make a purchase from the Product Page. The secondary pictures should be correct, but the title and the first picture will be the stock title and picture from the Product Page, not the title or picture of the actual listing.
If you purchase from that page now, you will get the Geonosis Troopers set that is shown, which is a lot more money. But you have to click the red link "See details and exclusions" to go to the actual listing page, and see exactly what you are purchasing. It's shown in the second and third pictures, NOT the first picture, which is the stock image for that page.
If you scroll down on the Product Page, you will see other listings, and some of them match the title but some of them don't.
I would suggest that you ask the seller to cancel the transaction. Explain that you thought you were going to get the Geonosis set that was on the product page they had linked to by mistake, and you don't want the minifig that was actually purchased.
If the seller won't cancel, then you can return it with the reason "not as described" and explain that you wanted the Geonosis set that was on the product page where you purchased it from. This is a bit of a gray area, because the listing page does show the minifig that you purchased, but it should not have been linked to the wrong product page. Many sellers and buyers have no idea about this, but the seller is ultimately responsible for making sure that their listing is correct.

What is the item number? Or what page were you looking at?

Thank you very much, that explains what happened very well. I had requested a cancellation straightaway giving the reason that it was purchased by mistake, and this was accepted by the seller a day later.
I am very surprised that this is all so poorly labelled. I didn't know that there were separate product pages and individual listing pages.
My son was searching on eBay for this Lego set and then I logged in to purchase it. The price was a bit low for the set but it all seemed legitimate. It was quite upsetting for us to then see a different order confirmation.
Thanks again for the detailed response - if only eBay customer service was this good!
