I noticed that when you search for a particular search term, it will report '999 result for my search term'. However, there will only be a subset of the results displayed.
e.g. So in my example,
I searched for 'razor blade'
Ebay reported '37,803 results for razor blade'
I further filtered the results by clicking on Arts & Crafts category.
This reduced the results to 532.
'532 results for razor blade'
However, only 68 listings were displayed. My default is to show 200. But at the foot of the page, there was no 'next page' option. So no way to display all the results found. I have struggled to find a workaround, and it is easy to reproduce this behaviour on just about any search that returns more items than displayed on a single page.
I opened an incognito window in Google Chrome and did not sign in. Exact same behaviour.
What's going on?

In some cases, when the number of results does not match the number of listings shown, you may be seeing some listings that are multiple variation listings. In that case each variation counts as a separate result.
For instance, the following search returns for me 17 results:
PONTOON 21 RED RAG 36F SSR FLOATING JAPAN FISHING CRANK BAIT LURE 36mm 5.7g -xyz | eBay
But only displays one item with 17 variations.
If you are using the "lowest price" sort, you may see a note at the top of the results:
In that case, you must use that "View all results" link to see all the results, otherwise you are only seeing a subset that eBay considers relevant. Note that the number shown at the top of the results will not change after you use that link, but the number of listings actually displayed will change.

The count of "results" includes all variations. For instance, if a shirt comes in 4 sizes and 5 colors, that counts as 20 Results even though only one listing is showing.

Really helpful, thanks. I am an expert internet user/developer, but could not fathom out why this was happening.
I cannot say that it is intuitive to display x results found, but not clarify this is a composite value, and not representative of the number of listings found.
May ebay would update the results found with listings found too.
e.g. 500 results found in 100 listings.

It seems the results count is based on the number of items found in all the listings. A composite value.
However, that is a little misleading. So maybe ebay would update the results found message with the number of listings found too.
e.g. 500 results found in 100 listings.

eBay is rarely intuitive. It's easier to understand if you imagine that it is programmed by the computer class at San Jose Junior High.
