Shipping calculator lied

When I listed an item I weighed the item using a scale and put in the dimensions of the package into the ebay shipping calculator. I selected USPS priority mail as the shipping method. Now that the item has sold the cost to print the label ebay is giving me is considerably more expensive than what the shipping calculator estimated to ship my item via USPS priority mail. What gives? Why did the shipping calculator lie to me? I feel like I’ve been coerced into listing my item on ebay because they made the shipping look initially  cheaper than it turned out to be. Not a good selling experience thus far…

Re: Shipping calculator lied

The shipping calculator is 99.9% accurate, when theres a discrepancy, its usually user error.This is for the heavy engine you sold, with forty dollars priority shipping?

@wasue2

the calculator was showing the cost to ship to YOU.

actual label is to the buyer location, and is usually different.

Re: Shipping calculator lied

Yes it is for that engine. When listing it, the shipping calculator tried to tell me that $30 dollars with the eBay recommend calculated shipping was enough to box and ship priority mail when I first listed it. After it sells its $65 dollars to print a label to send it!. It is rather annoying that eBay and/or USPS would only declare the actual cost to ship it AFTER it sells. No option to preview the cost of shipping to different locations when listing.

That cost to ship should be transferred to the seller. I know it's against eBay policy to ask for more money after which is understandable. But is there a way to ensure the seller pays the full cost of shipping next time? Luckily it sold for enough to cover the cost of shipping. But that's biting into my profit and pretty annoying. When listing it I used the calculator, put in weight and dimensions but when it gave me $30 using the calculated shipping (that I knew was too low) so I set a flat rate of $40 thinking that was enough to cover it. Nope.

Not sure what I was supposed to do differently to get an accurate shipping price? I'm not sure how to ensure that next time the full cost of shipping is transferred to the buyer, regardless of where the item is being sent? I was under the assumption that the shipping calculator based the cost off a general cost to ship the item to somewhere in the lower 48 of the USA...

Thank you

Re: Shipping calculator lied

It doesn't make sense that when listing an item and establishing the shipping price that the shipping calculator would base the shipping cost of sending an item to myself, the seller. Unless eBay shipping calculator really is that dumb. I see there is also a shipping calculator that buyers see, but I used the one that appears when listing an item. I chose the flat rate of $40 to send the item, should I have chosen the eBay recommended calculated shipping option?

Maybe that was my mistake - not choosing calculated shipping? I opted against that however as it said it was going to cost $30 to ship it using that calculated shipping option which is also too low. I've sold engines outside eBay and paid way more to send them than $30. Also that doesn't cover the cost of the packaging I needed to cover. I am still a little confused as to why the price of shipping proposed 10 days ago when listing was so much lower than today despite the weight and dimensions of the package staying the same?

Is there a way next time to ensure that the price to ship the item + plus handling fees, regardless of where the person lives, are paid in full by the buyer? Should I use calculated shipping next time?

Thank you
