Last week I got 2 unsolicited eBay messages about my electric violin auction. One of the messages offered to buy off eBay. I ignored both these messages but today I have a warning not to make offers to sell off site and it referenced the violin!!! I checked and have NOTHING that should warrant that. I made no offers nor hinted or provided any identifying info! What happened and will there be some sort of strike against my account over this???

I had this same exact thing happen. I called and was "assured" that it was just a precaution and if my account was ever suspended for some reason due to messages asking me to contact the person directly it would be reviewed by a person and sided in my favor. I don't have total confidence in this. I was also told that it is better to just ignore the messages than to reply in any way even by stating that I will not do any transactions outside the ebay system.

It's pretty scary that you are the one who got the warning when the buyer is the one who should get the warning, and possibly more than that.......
Ebay has is all backward.
Ebay: Punish the one's who deserve it, not the innocent.

Perhaps it would be best to both report the buyer and in ebay messages reply that you only sell on ebay.

They probably have 3 cameras fixed on your house by now.I would pack two weeks of light rations and make a break for it!Seriously though...Ebay should of never contacted you as you made no reply to the buyer, but the people over there are the equivalent of bizaro-world,and do things a little backwards.

Same thing happened to me, the person wanted to contact me off ebay, I said no I cannot do that due to ebay rules. eBay sent me the warning then for no reason.

Been 20-years with eBay and I've received the same notice several times. Contact eBay by phone, hopefully soon, and you'll probably be transferred to a department that deals specifically with such issues. Insist that you don't want any strikes against your eBay account. These things happen when algorithms (and NOT people) scour our communications (and actually everything we do, including posting in this forum) on eBay. If you get a few of these "warnings", then algorithms just might affect your ability to sell on eBay.

I'm wondering if the buyer writing the message gets the same warning, a different warning, or none at all???

They get the same exact message. Had a repeat International customer having an issue with shipping not calculating properly and asked for a paypal invoice, we both got a wrist slap.........
