when I open an item from my search result it stays open -- so that if I open twenty dresses from my search -- there are 20 items open in my toolbar --this never happened before -- once I closed out of viewing an item it was no longer in the browser

There is a setting in your search Customize menu that controls whether listings are opened in a new browser tab or the same browser tab.

From a search results page with many results shown, if you click on the icon in the upper right of the results that allows you to choose List or Gallery view you should see the "Customize" menu option.

If you close your browser, the setting may revert back, however.
