Pressing ENTER key after bidding no longer does anything....

Currently, if I am bidding on an item and I enter $10.00 in the white box that you type in for your bid... If I hit enter after that, nothing happens.  I have to actually click the "place bid" button, then confirm the bid.

This never happened until a few days ago.   For years, I can type my bid, press "Enter", then click "confirm".  Pressing Enter after typing in your bid should advance you to the "confirm bid" screen.

It only seems to be affecting my account.  If my friend logs into her eBay account on my computer, using the same browser... she can type 10.00 in for the bid and hit the enter key, which advances to the next screen.

Any ideas?  Is it an account setting?

Exactly the same thing happing to me. I used to be able to type a bid amount and hit "enter" twice and be done. Now I have to click the mouse for both buttons. I bid hundreds of times every day and this is really cramping my style (and my mouse finger!) Just started after years of the "enter" key working. I didn't change any settings. Why is this happening to me? /cry

Pressing ENTER key after bidding no longer does anything....

This just started happening with me this morning.

Anyone found out what is causing it? Is it an intentional system change?

It is REALLY inconvenient when bidding on multiple items as I do.

Thanks.

This just started happening for me today too.  I place hundreds of bids every week (on cheap beads) and thought my enter buttons was broke on my key board, cleaned it, still didn't work and then noticed the other enter key doesn't work either, but only on eBay.  I see it's happening to more people every day.  Is there any answer yet on how to fix it?  Not the end of the world obviously but something different to get used to I guess, if it doesn't start working normal again...

Haven't bid on anything in a while and don't know if the appearance and function of the bid boxes have changed, but suspect it is intentional and there will be no fix forthcoming unless at least 50,000 users scream about it.

eBay is moving everything to popupy overlay dialogs that are keyboard unfriendly (they think the future is mobile).

Will take a look and see if there is any easy* (or any viable) kludge to work around it.

*easy likely means at minimum running a Greasemonkey script in Firefox or similar in other browsers, so don't get your hopes up. There is probably a way to run an external Autohotkey script outside the browser as a keyboard daemon that watches for bid boxes and enter key hits, but that could be very messy and inconsistent. First have to replicate the issue and see.

(I'm interested not because of the bidding box issue as much as the other places on the eBay site that impact me personally, but a general solution should work in most or all cases.)

Played with it a bit in Firefox 3.6.24 and it's doing it to me too (been so long, but I believe it was doing it quite a while ago during a previous round of "improvements").

Anyway, no joy so far, but this type of JavaScript programming isn't my forte. I got a handle on the bid box and enter key events, but haven't figured out how to trigger the submit yet (and then I have to figure out the actual final delivery method - it's preliminary stuff in Firebug console at the moment.)

One thing I did note is that if you whack the TAB key after entering a bid, it jumps to the "Place Bid" button and a subsequent "enter" key submits the bid. The 2 whacks on the TAB key place focus on the confirm button and a subsequent "enter " should place the new bid. Not ideal, but all keyboard without having to switch to mouse.

Exactly the same behavior in Firefox 31 and Firefox 52.2.1 ESR - enter key no worky but does after hitting tab to move focus to the "place bid" button.

Side note: in both FF31 and FF52 there are no listing images - they are all out to lunch ("image not available").  Saw that issue reported somewhere here earlier today but hadn't noticed it in FF3.6.24 and it still isn't happening in FF3.6.24 (that's why I primarily use that old version - it can't do some eBay things, but the ones it can do are pretty rock solid when everyone else is having issues.)

i TOO have had this start as of yesterday,  (10-14-17) and it annoys the HECK outta me.  i've PMed eBay's FB page asking for answers & if there is a possible fix for it.  fingers crossed because, i TOO bid on hundreds of items a week.  it may just be a couple of seconds,  but if we're used to a function that works just fine and does SAVE TIME,  why would they do this?   i don't understand?

Thanks for all of the time you've put into this issue.  I'm glad to see it's not just me.  Well, actually I hate to see others struggle as well over something that ebay is the culprit behind.  I've gotten used to entering all bids with the mouse, so if it gets fixed, I'll have to retrain my brain again.  Good thing I acclomate well.  First world problems, haha!

Again, thanks for your (and others) efforts in trying to resolve this enter-key annoyance 🙂

I too appreciate your replies and work in trying to figure this out. I was the original thread poster. I've since call to eBay and spoke to somebody in technical support and they had absolutely no idea what the problem could be.

They told me they would pass it on but I've not heard back since the date this thread was posted.

It has to be account-based because I can confirm that if my friend signs into her eBay account on my computer, using the same browser, not clearing cookies, exact same conditions... She can click enter twice to make a bid. However it is 100% Impossible on my account. I do purchase a lot of items so I'm wondering if it's something eBay is intentionally doing to bulk bidders?

Good. That means less chance of someone placing a bid when their cat "accidentally" steps right on the keyboard Enter button.

Enter key does not work for me in Firefox 3.6.24, 31, or 52,  in older Opera v 11.61, or in IE8 in either of 2 accounts I tried or not logged in. Not logged in result would tend to indicate it has nothing to do with the account - and it's highly doubtful eBay would dish up different scripts to same browser based on account or login status (hmmm... possible - could be a conditional in a script with a bug)

(unless it is as nefarious as you speculate with them slowing down or obstructing certain accounts for unknown reasons. Maybe they have "data" that shows bulk bidders have a higher proportion of wrong amount bid retractions and this is their solution? 🙂

Unless tech actually looks at it and finds a bug I wouldn't expect anything to change. If I get some roundtuits I'll continue to look into possible client side fixes since it is a general issue for me elsewhere on eBay too, but as I said before will likely be messy, require an addon, and be Firefox (old versions) specific.

What browser is the enter key working in sometimes?

What happens if you try to poke in a bid not logged in?  (if it recognizes the enter key it should take you to a sign in screen)

Pressing ENTER key after bidding no longer does anything....

I use Chrome with Adblock but that's never caused any issues with ebay.  Enter key still wouldn't work for me when I logged out.  I'll check out IE on my work computer this weekend and also have a coworker see how it works for them.  Don't have any other ebayers in my home to ask.

I figure I've placed over 20,000 bids easy since last spring (OMG I need to get a life!!) but have only retracted one bid when I entered $56 instead of .56 cents.  The bid went suspicously high (looked like a shill bidder involved) so I contacted the seller and he cancelled my bid.  Otherwise I don't bother cancelling my erronious bids which happens once in a while on my phone.

I would hope ebay wouldn't discourage or block legit bidders.  Even though my account is clean, I have been blocked by a few Chinese sellers that claim they don't make any money and basically sell cheap beads just for the positive feedback.  So they don't like to sell to the heavy bidders I guess.  I just laugh when their items sell for .06 cents because they block bidders.  Ooops, got slightly off task here, sorry.

One thing I did notice that looked different today is the "watch" button is now bigger and has a heart in front of it.  That change is definitely for the better.  So maybe they're still moving things around and had to disable the enter key function for that.  But what do I know?

Thank you so much for your continued investigation into this!  I really appreciate it.  🙂
