The new messaging system will not accept a paste like the old system. I tried to cut and paste an eBay ID number of a product in the new reply section no go, then went back to the old system and it was accepted without and problem.

Can you check if you're experiencing the same @1786davycrockett ? I remember seeing a thread from you about the new messaging system so I'm taking a shot that you might be using it. Off the top of my head I can't remember which regular posters are using it and which opted out.
I refuse to use it until we can CC to email. That's business-essential functionality for me.

@mrmac1903 are you using the app or desktop? What version of the app or which browser are you using?
I just tested in the android app and on Chrome and Firefox and am able to copy and paste a listing number and successfully send it in the new messaging system.
I know there have been some complaints about it not making it a clickable URL if you share a link to an item, but haven't seen just sharing the number being blocked.
If you don't mind providing the item number you were using, I'd be happy to test that too to see if it's something specific about that number/listing.

No, I am not using the "new, vastly improved" messaging system -- I opted out for the "classic" model, which still permits me a much easier means to re-visit my previous "sent" messages.
In fact -- I just used it a few minutes ago. It took less than one minute to find a previous email from over a week ago. I can't imagine how much additional time I would need to suffer under the "improved" system!

I just checked to see if I could "cut and paste" something from my "sent" messages in the "classic" version of "Messages," and had NO problems transferring the "sent" message elsewhere.
Oh, good -- yet another reason to despise the "new, improved, family-size" edition of eBay "messages."
What else can eBay destroy?
(Probably shouldn't give them any more ideas. . ..)

@mrmac1903 I copied and pasted exactly what you wrote and was able to send it in a message through the new system. Sorry, not sure what else to suggest for you to try.

Thank you for trying. It might just not like me.
