Messages From Ebay

For about 1 year I have been getting a message from ebay that says this:

New sign in activity on your eBay account. I currently have 140 of them in my message folder. When I sign in I get the CAPTCHA Images & have to click the images before I can get to my account. My latest phone call to ebay's we have no idea what we are doing customer service line resulted in being told by them that my IP Address is the cause. I told them comcast is not the cause of this problem & that I want the messages stopped but of course I doubt they ever will. These messages are going to my registered email account too but of course ebay doesn't give a you know what about that either. Does anyone know why this is happening & how to stop it?

When I first starting getting these I thought someone hacked into my account so I changed my password.

It didn't help. I am hoping you get an answer that solves this problem!

I believe the site isn't recognizing the device you are using to sign in on.

Did you change devices, or used to sign in on another device ?

I am not techy at all, but someone who is could fix it for you quickly.

"New sign in activity" means a different device than the site is used to seeing is trying to sign in.

Do you use a browser that does not accept cookies? An example would be Chrome's "incognito" option? Or perhaps one that clears cookies when you exit the browser? Or are you clearing cookies manually when you exit a website?

It is the use of cookies that allows websites to recognize or "remember" who we are. If you're doing anything to prevent or eliminate cookies, ebay.com will not know it's you when you go the the site.

If you are using a VPN, the same thing will be true--the site will not recognize you based on your IP address.

The device you are trying to sign in with may have fallen out of sync or need to be synced to the site.

Have you recently installed anti-virus software ? If so, it may be working too well, and needs adjusted to accept the site, or the site entered as an exception in the software.

I hope any of this helps.

I believe this is a browser issue, @ourancestorsattic. I have no issues with Safari or Firefox. With Chrome, however, exactly what you described has been going on since early this year. I can close out the Chrome window, reopen it 30 seconds later, and I'm forced to sign in again with the annoying captcha pics and I get the new sign in activity e-mail.

I use the check box that says 'keep me signed in on this computer' but that's not happening with Chrome. I don't use Chrome much so it hasn't been worth my time to explore this, but I think it must be related to browser settings and one of the Chrome updates that was released earlier this year because the change happened all of a sudden.

If this is really annoying you then using a different browser is an option until/unless you figure out the Chrome settings causing this.

Your browser settings are probably different from mine, @eleanor*rigby. I didn't change the settings on my browser, but I think the settings I (and the OP) had in place combined with one of the Chrome updates from earlier this year caused the issue. I remember when this change happened all of a sudden, the browser had just been updated which is why I'm making the connection. It can probably be resolved if that setting is identified.

I have used Firefox for many years &have never used chrome. Yes I have always had Firefox set to remove all cookies when I close it. I never had this problem with ebay until this past year & don't have it with any other website I use daily which include Amazon, Comcast Email, A website were I have my Photographic Art listed & Bank Sites.  I use a Self-Built Windows 10 Desktop Computer & use Glary Utilities as my cleanup program & Avast Security Suite. All are updated regularly & I have used them for years too. So I still think this is a problem caused by ebay.

I figured this out for Chrome on Mac. One of my settings was different and I didn't change it. I checked a screenshot I had of my settings from late last year and can confirm this option was not selected, and I hadn't changed my settings since before I took the screenshot. I barely ever open Chrome.

I spoke with someone else I know that use Chrome for Mac and the same thing happened to them - the setting changed on them after one of the Chrome updates. The option to clear cookies was selected even though they hadn't selected it.

Change that setting and your problem will resolve. A website won't keep you logged in if you don't store cookies.

I have the exact same problem. Every time I close all my eBay tabs, then open them again, it wants me to log in. However, every time I log in, it says "Getting tired of passwords?" I have never tried it, mainly because I don't know what it's going to do, but I think it might help you.
