There are ebay auctions that I watch just to see how high an item sells. When I then go to post these links for friends to see, the link pulls up something else totally unrelated or a "suggested" item. Why is this? It seems like this has only just started to happen recently.

eBay recently made some changes -- the result is that links to closed auctions redirect to somewhat similar open listings.
There should be a blue bar at the top of the new listing that says something to the effect that "The listing you’re looking for is no longer available. Check out this similar item we found for you." The underlined word "listing" should be a link to the original item. Send that link to your friends.

Yes, I noticed. It's obnoxious. Even more obnoxious is that the "View Relisted Item" links from the Watch List Ended items don't direct you to the relisted items but—wait for it—to the ended listings.
The new changes to the layout, appearance, and features of the Watch List are as annoying as the fact that eBay removed the "All Lists" option, which I liked better for viewing watched items, and which I started using a year or two ago, when the Watch List link stopped working.
Moreover, those changes—along with the unfortunate and misguided new changes to the listing-creation interface—have coincided with my Saved Searches email alerts completely stopping.

The following All Lists link is currently working for me, though I can't guarantee that eBay won't take the capability away:
https://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MyEbayBeta&CurrentPage=MyeBayNextListIndex
I have All Lists as my eBay landing page; I will definitely miss it if it goes away.

Yes, ebay have messed up royally. I do NOT want to have all these 'similar item suggestions' thrown at me. Also this means you also cannot check on a seller's item in the feedback profile. Especially if you want to check the negative ones. Secondly, the 'view relisted item' link does not work and the same thing happens - a 'suggestion'. Really annoying as I sometimes miss auctions and that is the only way of finding out if it is relisted. A workaround is accessing the seller's listed items to see if it has reappeared. I have heard a lot of sellers experiencing sales drops - I am sure this does not help them. There are lots of other bugs too. Search algorithn is awful and biased and often throws up stuff that has no relation to search words you use and not only that but put these listing before others. Ebay allowing sellers to consistently sell blatantly inferior goods to continue using site and not only that but giving them priority (a lot from China), allowing foreign sellers to abuse 'location' so when you want say UK only you get them flagging up and often don't find out until your parcel arrives really late. This really is damaging 'homegrown' businesses. Ebay don't seem to care and just want max money. They also blatantly allow people to sell ebooks without the correct permissions and even if you report it they do nothing. Ebay used to be great but small businesses are now suffering because the algorithms are unfairly biaised.
