In order to keep my computer safe on Ebay, what Security program should I purchase?

I just had  terrible experience  trying  to   buy  Norton  Security for  my  new  computer.  I talked with  two  different  guys  on  two  days.   And  they  both  sounded liked  Snake-Oil- salesmen      to  me!! 

Because of  this  I  have lost  faith in  Norton.   And  I  do  not  trust  them  to  guard  my   computer.

Someone   recommended  Microsoft's  Defender  programs  to me  .  Do  any  of you  think  Defender   is  a  good  choice?

I  welcome  any  advice  that  the folks  here have  to  offer.

I don't use the windows defender program , so I can't help
Many love norton like my good friend who works for IBM
I use Mcafee total protection & many don't like them.
I have used Mcafee for about 10 years now, as does my my sister & I had my Mom's computer covered as well.
My total protection covers all my equipment

Thanks  for  telling me  about your  experience  and that of your  friends.    I have  been  using Norton   myself  ever since  I first  got  a  computer.  And  I wanted  to  sign  up  with  with  them  again.  Unfortunately  I was  transferred  to some  wacko  who  said I should not  buy  Norton!!!  I had to  buy   some other program  for  protection  from  Hackers.    That was not  even MADE  by  Norton

This  sounded like a Scam  to me.   So  I walked  away.    And now  I am  worried  that  some new managemement  has  taken   over  at Norton.   And  I am  afraid that  this previousy  wondeful  company  l  can no longer be   be  trusted. 

And that's  why I have  signed  up  for  Defender.  Because  I HAVE     to have some protection  from  somewhere.

I ditched McAfee years ago. I've been running Norton ever since on multiple computers & my phone without any problems. Defender came on my new system but I like Norton.
