I cannot recover my account due to a phone number I no longer have

Hey everyone! I have an eBay account that’s about 10 years old, but I haven't used it in over a year. Yesterday, I saw something I really wanted to buy, so I logged in. I had to go through ID verification (which went fine), and I placed an offer on the item. After the seller accepted, I completed the payment.

Shortly after, I got an email from eBay saying they changed my password due to possible third-party access, followed by another email saying my account was temporarily suspended because of "odd behavior" when I placed the offer—even though I was the one who made it!

When I tried to reset my password, it asked for two-factor authentication via a phone number I no longer have. I’ve been in contact back and forth with eBay’s customer service, and they asked me to provide my ID and proof of address, which I did. But then they rejected my current address because it isn’t the one I used when I created the account—which was 10 years ago!

Now, they’re telling me to create a new account, but I need the old one because I purchased an item and still haven’t received it.

eBay has become so hard to deal with—I have no idea why this happened to my account, especially since I’ve used it to buy a bunch of stuff over these 10 years and never had a single issue before. It’s really frustrating to have lost almost 2 days trying to reset it and contact customer service.

Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Is there a way to recover my old account? Any advice would be awesome—thanks in advance!

eBay has tightened up some of their security measures.

When you accessed the old account, the first step should have been updating any old contact info (address, phone) before making any purchases.

Your seller may still ship the item. If they don't, and if you're unable to recover the account, you can always file a payment dispute with your funding source.

But keep working with eBay customer service - they may be able to help verify your ID and restore access.

Any chance you have a copy of your old photo ID with the old address? If so you can probably take a pic of both the old ID and current ID next to each other to help your case.

You may also want to try eBay's social CS channels. Send a DM to one of eBay's social CS teams: ebay on facebook, ebayforsellers on insta, askebay on X

Thanks a lot for answering.

I have changed my address and even deleted the old one when I accessed my account to have the item shipped to me, but somehow they are refusing to accept the proof I have from this address and want one from the registering one (gas/water etc bill, which I don't have because it wasn't on my name).

I tried to contact ebay on facebook and they said they could not help me on this matter.
