Can anyone tell me why I sometimes get a "bad request" message when trying to reply to an eBay message?
I had this happen on the weekend with my work computer and assumed my work put up some kind of block, but when I rewrote the message (and shortened it a lot, frustration over spending time doing something and losing the content), it went through.
Tonight I had it happen again, and no matter how I tried to reply, I kept getting "bad request". I rewrote this message as well, then it went through.
In the past, eBay would intercept anything that they think violates policy (key words being used that indicate a breach of policy), and let you know this is why it wasn't being sent. There was nothing in my messages that would violate policy. The first was explaining the shipping from Canada (he wanted details), and the second was telling a customer that we get lots of a particular token coming through our shop because of where in Ontario I live. Nothing nefarious.

If it happens a lot, I'd be more inclined to ask eBay, but this being Sunday and a Holiday, I vote glitch.

I'm getting the error message today. My guess is that a piece of duct tape fell off the eBay "infrastructure".

@sin-n-dex @jdf-concepts @divwido
Same problem today (Tuesday April 19) for me. Other postings ("ask a mentor") reference the same problem last year. As @jdf-concepts suggests, eBay apparently ran out of duct tape long ago.
The "Contact" utility still worked (apparently) for me.

Which page were you using to reply? I think one of the selling pages has a bad link that does not pass certain parameters correctly, resulting in an "expired" message error.
Try using a different page to reply, or try going through your message inbox.
If that does not help, you can compose a new message by going to the user's feedback or profile page and using the Contact link there.
eBay messages sometimes choke on messages containing special characters or numbers that look like phone numbers. Try using only alpha characters -- no "@" or "=" signs.

I had this happen 3 times just now and ebay was not able to help!! After 19 years of selling, this has never happened before!! Reply was measurements for the inside of a jewelry box. Now I cannot contact the buyer!!

At what point are you getting that error?
If you are sending a message, try using an alternative page or another browser (or the app). Try signing in to ebay.ca and sending a message there. Try going to the user's feedback or profile page and sending a message using the Contact link there.
If prompted for an item number, try selecting "not about an item".
If you are replying to a message and you have eBay messages forwarded to your email inbox, try replying to the email directly rather than using the blue Reply button in the message.

I sometimes get this message if I hit the blue reply button in an email that takes me to the eBay website to reply. If I go directly to my eBay messages page and hit reply to the buyer's message on that page it usually works without the error.
