Changing email address. Says already registered in new email address.

I have tried to change my email address and edited by entering my new email address but alerted that there is already an account with that address? I'm not aware of creating an account with my new email address. How do I resolve this issue? Presumably I will have to delete the account with my new email address and try editing again through the account bearing my old address? How do I log in to the account that has my new email address logged?  Phew ! Thanks.

You may have inadvertently created an account by trying to sign in using Google or Facebook at some point.

You can try signing in using Google or Facebook and see if that sends you to the alternate account.

If not, try signing in the usual way using that email address as your username. If your usual password does not work, try the "need help signing in" or "forgot password" option -- you should be able to have a temporary password sent to that email address that you can use to sign in.

Once you get into the account, you can delete the account if you want to. Just be sure you are deleting the correct account.
