Any way to enable legitimate 2FA?

The only options I find for two-step verification within my eBay account are texting to a phone number (which I won't share with eBay) or authenticating on a downloaded eBay app (which is worse than sharing a phone number). They don't even offer a means to do Email 2FA, which is as bad as text messaging but at least it's better than nothing and they already have my Email.  My perception is that to enable 2FA, eBay demands I must give up more unnecessary personal information (PIA) to them.

TOTP and FIDO are the most legitimate means to execute 2FA and by design they don't require PIA - has anyone figured out a way to set up 2FA on eBay one of these ways?

Unlikely.  Ebay have only offered SMS authentication for some time.  There are plenty of requests on the forum for a better method for example TOTP, despite SMS being the least secure and is open to 'phone jacking'.

It seems if you want to improve security, you need to use the app.  Many companies these days prefer you to use the app as they can hoover up lots of personal data this way.

I know recently, the US and UK governments have banned TikTok due the large amount of data it steals.  When I first heard the news article, I thought "What?  Like Google?" lol.

To have a device like a mobile phone that is always logged in and almost in the possession of the owner is a data miners dream come true, which is why everyone wants you to use the app rather than the web.

Ok I'll get off my soap box, but say to eBay: Is harvesting my personal data more important than user security?  Food for thought.....

Cheers

Steve
