Account 'temporarily locked' - can't unlock

My friend's account has been temporarily locked. When trying to log in, he is prompted to reset his password. However, after tapping the 'reset pwd' button, he gets a message 'That's not a match. Please try again or contact us'. Tapping on the 'Contact Customer Service' link (the only option) opens a page with a large button 'Chat with our automated assistant' which does not work.

On the same page, under 'Related help', there is 'Reset your password' link which opens another help page on which there is a button to reset password. Clicking on this button brings you back to the begging of this procedure, asking you again to sign in. And then the whole cycle repeats over and over again.

How does one get out of this Catch 22 situation?

Thanks in advance

You appear to be registered in Australia, but you are signed in to ebay.com at the moment.

Which browser or app is being used? Latest version?

Any difference if another browser is tried?

Anything odd about the network connection? Using a VPN or hotspot? Using Ghostery or Disconnect? Try the procedure without those.

Try a different device to rule out a device issue. Try using the eBay app when not connected to the usual WiFi.

@eburtonlab

Thanks for your reply.

I have tried using different browser (latest ver.), on different device, without and with (AU) VPN - the same result every time.

Can't receive calls and SMS on my reg. number (AU) as I'm currently overseas.

Can't have eBay call me either because the country I'm in is not listed.

I'm currently overseas.

That is probably why you are locked out.

Trying to reset your password from overseas using a VPN looks very suspicious to eBay, unfortunately, so it is unlikely to be successful if eBay already suspects your account has been compromised.

Try using the "Need help signing in?" link on the sign in page where you are prompted for your password. Choose the "Reset" option, but rather than resetting your password, use the "Contact" link there -- that is for users that are unable to contact eBay through normal channels.
