Accepted counter offer now shows as not being accepted but still pending

I sent an offer to those watching one of my items. One buyer sent a counter offer, and I accepted the offer.  I received a response immediately from ebay that the item is pending payment, though usually upon acceptance of a buyer's offer they are charged immediately for the item. I returned to ebay an hour or so later to find that the item now shows that the buyer's offer is awaiting my response (again), though I had already accepted their offer.

eBay is now requiring the buyer to pay to complete the purchase, otherwise the item remains listed for anyone else to buy.

If you are already requiring a payment method to make an offer in your Buyer Requirements, eBay may be allowing the buyer to provide an alternative payment method or to combine orders before being charged automatically after a certain period of time -- on the order of an hour or so.
