Probably Continental European, but all information gratefully received

I have so far failed in my attempts to identify the maker

A guess, German - possibly Schafer & Vater

Thank you......I have looked carefully at Schafer and Vater but I can't see anything that is really similar. I think you are probably right about Germany...I had thought possibly German or French.
