Always Include Addressee in Auctions!

One of my postcards is "going home", yippee! It turns out that the addressee was the grandfather of my buyer. He bought the card as a surprise for his mom, whom I imagine will be surprised indeed. I always include that sender & receiver info, just in case, you never know ... and BINGO, we have a match! --Margaret P.S. Oh, and if you'd like to see the otherwise unremarkable card, it was 1968 Baking Ovens Taos Pueblo New Mexico NM Petley (6268250272)

How sweet! That is so awesome that it is ending up in the hands of relatives of the original sender! Yes ALWAYS be sure to pay attention to the adress on the back! I bought a card about a year ago(back before I even knew what was valuable) and recently noticed it was adressed to somebody c/o a motion picture company in CA. Really wierd thing was it was dated 1914! So I looked it up and that ''somebody'' happened to be the first art director in major Hollywood motion pictures and the Lasky film co. was, get this...the FIRST MAJOR FILM COMPANY IN HOLLYWOOD! Later they changed names. They are still around but now called ''Warner Brothers''. LOL! And the adress was a barn turned into the first studio in LA which was moved from its original adress and is now a hollywood museum. I contacted the museum and they purchased it! So now I'm checking the back of the cards BEFORE I BUY THEM! Catherine

i have had a few "go home" Not so long ago a chap purcased 5 cards all which had come from the same batch. He later went on to buy the other 100+ that I had addressed to the same people. Most of the cards were run of the mill greetings cards, so you can imagine my glee at reuniting them, as otherwise they would still be lingering here waiting to be part of a job lot! Sara

I have been away for a while. Came back and now reading lots on the threads. About address on the back of cards,I never knew what I should do, show it or not. I have stated that there is an address and show part of it (hide Street and number in scan) thinking that this person may still be alive and would not want their name and address on the net for anyone to see. If the card is very old, then no problem, most likely they are no longer alive. I had some cards that all went to the same address, I went to that town to inquire about the family, an antique dealer told me the entire family had been gone for years. So I showed that address. Do you think I am right in doing it this way?

I figure that if the previous owners of the cards didn't want them - and by the sheer fact that you have cards from somone you don't know then this must be the case, then its fair game to the people that purchased them to maybe help reunite those cards with members of the families that may not have even been asked before they were sold! The only exception I have made was from cards that I purchased from my neighbour, she asked that I do not give out her address on the internet and I have honoured that request. Although a few buyers have commented that I didn't have to go far for my stock once they see my return address on the envelope is only one door away from the cards they have just purchased! Sara

Well, I figure, anything before zip codes(196?) you're safe with listing the adress as it is no longer ''technically'' that person's legal adress without the zip code. I don't really see why not to sell cards with any adresses though, as once you adress anything an adress is out there in the public's eye, and with postcards other pieces of information are too. But maybe i'm missing something. Catherine

I only type in post mark date & city and name and city of addressee in the listing. I used to include the street address, but it dawned on me that folks are searching names more than anything. Kathy

I only include the info Kathy mentions BUT she brings up an intriguing point - COULD collectors be interested in cards sent to their own address over the last 100+ years? Jim - its HOT here in KC!

I include the address as it stops irritating "ask seller a question" emails arriving in my in box. It only takes a second to type, and as I have sold to people looking for particular streets, including a criminologist that was gathering information about the residents of a street where a crime was committed - I will carry on adding them! I had been doing the same as Kathy, Jim and Diane--putting the name of the addressee, city and state (but not the street address ) in my descriptions. I have begun including scans of the reverse of the cards (thank you Auctiva), and don't want to alter the image in any way. I haven't yet listed a card with an image that contains a recent street address, but I don't think there is a problem with showing it. (I haven't had Sara's situation, where someone specifically asked that their address not be posted). --Richard-- P.S. Is there a prize for the most parentheses in a post?
