Is Ebay kidding? They want this highly personal info to "verify" my identity before they'll pay me money for the stuff I sell with their new payment system starting March 1st. How about my Driver's License number and mother's maiden name too!!
No way I'm giving that kind of info to them. They don't need it and it puts me at risk for identity theft. All they need is my bank's routing number and my account number.
Been an Ebayer for 21 years but I sure won't be selling on Ebay any more unless they rescind this intrusive, identity theft bait policy.

You are very late to this game.
PayPal doesnt want eBay's business so eBay went in search of someone who would take it. This is called Managed payments and this company does this for a whole lot of sites.
Now, you must provide said data to sell here or leave. No plan B and no debate. This is the way it is.

They're going to process your payments, so they're on the hook to issue a 1099k, so they need that info per IRS regulations.
Stay, go, whatever. No need to announce it.

PayPal "processed my payments" for 21 years without issuing a 1099 or needing my SS# or DOB...

@cobber409 Unfortunately they have been rolling out Managed Payments for 2 years ... all accounts (that decide to continue to sell) will be in the program this year. The contract with PayPal runs out this year. So if you decide to shut down your eBay operation and close PayPal as well make sure PayPal gets rid of your SSN and Bank info too ... that will take 6 months to close that account because they allow 180 days for returns ...

That is completely incorrect. You just do not remember.

You've said this a few times on different threads. I've asked you where you got this info from, but at the time of this post you have never replied. I am interested in where you got this info from, please advise.

So Ebay is changing its business model to eliminate casual/occasional sellers— at least those of us concerned with identity theft and privacy?
If the little guys are not profitable enough to them— well, it's their company and they can run it anyway they want. But kicking us to the curb could have unintended adverse effects on both their bottom line and their reputation.

The change doesn't have anything to do with getting rid of casual/occasional sellers.
The change happened so we can be paid when we sell an item.

Well said, Cobbler! You sound like a real person making a valid complaint. Your critics may demean you for expressing valid concerns. But eventually cobbler and the likeminded won't just complain; they will engage in commerce elsewhere.
Releasethekraken is either factually mistaken or deliberately misleading when he incorrectly states that ebay is legally obligated to ask for our social security numbers. Ebay is not required to file a 1099K unless the seller is engaged in over $20,000 is sales and has over 200 customers. So the pretext that ebay is required to get this information is... well pretextual. Which is a nice way of saying that it is a fake reason. Which is a nice way of saying that it is dishonest. And the claim that paypal is to blame for ebay's new draconian policies, that sounds about as honest as their claim that the IRS requires it (which it does not... look it up). Pretexts and scapegoating may convince the weak minded. But this kind of argument insults anyone who is intelligent enough to see through it.
Ebay will either relent on its new requirements or another entity will eventually fill the vacuum that ebay is creating. But it is a shame that ebay is conducting itself in this way. It may find that it doesn't just lose sellers; it may also lose a lot of buyers. I don't really sell anything on ebay, but I buy a great deal. One of the reasons is because I don't like engaging in commerce with Amazon and I like supporting the small sellers. It would be a shame if ebay puts me in a position where I am looking for alternatives to doing commerce with ebay. But hey, it is their company. The market will ultimately determine whether ebay is making a bad move.

Then you must not have a business paypal account. I had a one for years and even had one of paypal's mutual fund accounts so they needed my social security number in case my mutual fund account got into the higher rank. I see nothing wrong with ebay needing it as they have to report sales to the irs. If you want to cheat the government and go to prison for tax evasion then so be it. I value my freedom.

I said "they're on the hook" to send you one; I know quite well what the thresholds are. If you meet them, and eBay has no way of knowing in advance if you will, they need to already have that info. They can't go chasing for it after the fact, and risk fines because a seller won't cooperate.
BTW, many states have set a threshold as low as $600; apparently you're not keeping up with actual facts, but you're quick to accuse others of being "deliberately misleading". What's up with that?

You may want to check yourself on some of this stuff as you are not correct and you are "demeaning" another poster because you have not updated yourself.
There have been some changes made in 2020 that you may not be aware of. Some states, 8 to be exact are now requiring 1099Ks at a much lower level. And there are more states that will be adopting this soon. Some states as low as $600.

No matter how many sellers there are that don't like supplying the information to MP that they need is not going to change Ebay's position on this. They ARE required to collect the information and they aren't going to break the law to make some feel better and incur money penalties because of it.

You can get paid now just fine so no change is required-- unless,of course, Ebay gets rid of the current pay system....which is what they are doing.
The new info requirements may not have been established to get rid of casual sellers-- but I think that will be an unintended effect. That kind of thing happens with many decisions.
If Ebay persists on requiring my Social Security number and DOB, I am pulling the plug on selling-- and so are several of my friends...
