As a registered ebay member for 18 years i have been suspended from selling for not registering for managed payments. i do not have a ebay business. why do i have to give my social security number? and checking account routing number? to list or sell. that is very invasive. I guess there is no choice, its looking more and more like the last days in the book of revelation of the bible concerning buying and selling. The more of your financial data put out the more possibilities of hacking. Does anybody else have any concerns about these changes or what to do?

Over 2 years ago, when eBay announced MP was going to be introduced and mandated for all its sellers, I chose to set up on another selling venue. For many years now, I have always had an alternate site besides eBay; selling on more than one site is of great benefit. Over the years some of these alternate sites have chosen similar paths/policies/rules /greed over its sellers & so forth so I am no longer on those sites but my current alternate site is doing OK for what it is - a smaller lesser known site but it works for me because I am not dependent upon the sales $ for income. Online selling is a hobby for me. Sellers who choose not to follow eBay with its Managed Payment system will have to make whatever choice is in their best interests going forward. There are alternatives, but successfully accomplishing one's goals on those selling markets, largely depends upon one's expectations and getting beyond eBay...

Hi, I sure do, I am not sure what is going on but I decided when I signed up for ebay years back that I would make a designated account at the bank just for ebay transactions. Then Paypal was part of ebay so it wasn't a big deal. Then they split and Ppal started charging a fee so a lot goes to everyone else. I still haven't signed up for managed payments but I guess if I want to sell here then I have to. I may just give it up and sell only on the other websites. This is what happens when the rich get to be the richest and they all stop caring about the small guy just like in the Covid shutdowns!!

You are a business if you sell on ebay in the sense that you have government and tax obligations. How much and what kind depends on how much you sell and the source of the items. EBay is required by the government to have your SSN on file. You can apply for a taxpayer identification number if you prefer using that but if you want to sell here, you must provide o e or the other. You will find that other selling sites will want the same information.

I'm sure that did not come as a surprise to you. You were no doubt informed that enrollment in Managed Payments was mandatory in order to continue selling on eBay.

Same reason you had to give it to PayPal and your financial institution: so they can issue 1099s (if applicable) and to comply with the USA Patriot Act and other federal regulations.

Like the same checking account and routing number that appear on every check you've ever written to a business or an individual?

It may feel a bit invasive, but I've been in for over a year and am not in fear. PayPal already had my SSN and banking information, as I use the same account now as I've always used. It's doable... fear not. Good luck.

Not really.
I've been using the same program on another site for a few years and Ebay has had access to my checking account since I started selling here.

Quite right. I'm with ya.
Notice how everywhere you turn you see the little guys squeezed out. As a shopper you find less and less choice, you can't support small businesses because they're all gone and you end up giving more of your money to the big guns because there's just nowhere else to go. Look at all the small businesses being crushed due to the current crisis, another example. The big guys get bigger and bigger, and bigger. Junk from China has overtaken other sites that were specifically designed to discourage them originally. Amazon & Walmart will eventually be the only place to shop. These changes here effectively shut out the smallest sellers which was why I shopped here to begin with. Those rare treasures and garage sale bargains nudged out now, and the smaller sellers are often where you get the best customer service with a personal touch. These days you inquire about an item and most often the seller has no idea about it, has never seen it, it's coming from a warehouse.
All that is truly most valuable is valued least it seems. Assimilate or be gone.
