Have any of you contacted ebay and told them no? Have they let that happen? Wondering if I can do the same.

Yes you can do the same,if you dont want to confirm your identity, and you plan on never getting paid here.

Because of all the fraud and hacked accounts, not just ebay but other e commerce sites are requiring the same protocol. If you want to get paid, provide them with your ID.

all ebay members have the option to say no. its a God given right
its not going to get you anywhere

I gave eBay my info so I can get the money I’ve earned through sales and I also claim that money on my income tax.
If you want to be paid for the stuff you sell then you will need to upload your bank info so eBay knows where to send it. Upload your ID to prove who you are. They will also need your SS number so they can send tax info to the IRS when you earn $600 or more.
Don’t give eBay the info this is what will happen. They will not send you your money , they will send it to your state as unclaimed funds, you will need to provide your identification there to claim your funds.
So if you don’t want to give eBay the information they require, then you shouldn’t try to sell here.

While you are mulling over this decision you may want to end all your active listings so nothing else sells that you will not be getting paid for should you decide to tell them no.

Why haven't my friends I know gotten this requirement yet then? They have been selling much longer than me.

If you refuse to provide the information eBay WILL NOT pay you. Eventually they will turn over your funds to your State unclaimed funds department. This could take a year or more, after it is transferred you can make a claim with your States revenue department.
Of course your State will want all the same information (and more) before they will release the funds to you.

That might be part of the reason. They have more longevity as sellers than you do. You've only been selling since last July. Not only that, but you are selling some high dollar scam items (apple watches, electronics, etc.) Give your limited time frame here, ebay could ask you to also provide receipts for those items, due to all the stolen merchandise that is sold on so many different platforms. Not saying this is the problem nor am I accusing you of any of this behavior. You need to know that their request for ID is a required action on your part. If you choose not to, you won't be selling here on Ebay.
It's really not a big deal. Just make sure that your name, address, etc. is the same that you opened your account with last July. If not, update your ID. The law is leaning hard on all internet selling sites. Stolen merchandise and fraud is a multi-trillion dollar crisis and sadly, the tax payers take the burden of all this corruption, as do the sellers.
I hope you'll consider their request, so you can get back to selling.
Have a great evening.

Yeah, the thing that frustrates me is how much info need. They already have all my personal information my ssn and such, and now they want my ID. They most likely won't use it anyway. Just think of all the low lives that may work for ebay without them knowing they are hackers and scammers. Giving the ID is just asking for trouble. I will probably do it, but it is very uncomfortable.

But how much have your friends sold in 2023?
Under the law, beginning January 1, 2023, a TPSO is required to report third-party network transactions paid in 2022 with any participating payee that exceed a minimum threshold of $600 in aggregate payments, regardless of the number of transactions. TPSOs report these transactions by providing individual payee's an IRS Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions.
For eBay to follow the law, you have to comply. So how can eBay issue you a 1099K without personal identification?

Just do it...you'll be fine. You've got a nice inventory and same sales under your belt. Many people use Ebay as their sole means of income, so it's something you can always fall back on too. These days most people I know have 2 means of income because of the economy. Stay positive.
All the best.

They need it too to make sure that you are you. Remember, there might be other people with the same first and last name. I have 3 cousins with the same identical first and last name. So of course, ebay needs the license. Comply if you want to get paid. Eventually, your friends will have to provide it.
Ebay should have required this information from the very beginning that someone joined ebay. It doesn't matter if they are sellers or buyers.

I gave eBay a copy of my bank statement with the page of the bank logo on it. Did it bother me. Yes. But, I want to sell and collect funds from what I sell. So I did it. To get the real ID Driver's License and then I needed a renewed passport in a week giving eBay my bank statement was easy. We have to show our ID to buy alcohol. And very soon you will need a real ID or real ID Driver's License to enter a city, state, or federal building...that includes your city hall...etc. or to fly domestically in the USA.

While OP did not specify what eBay requested they should not need a drivers license or other form of photo ID to meet the third party financial reporting requirements. What they need is your full name and SSN. I utilize a number of third party financial processors including PayPal, Venmo and Stripe and none have request a photo ID or a copy of my drivers license.
