eBay's discontinuation of accepting American Express as a form of payment

This is my first time making a post so bear with me.  When I received the email stating that as of August 17, 2024, eBay will no longer accept American Express as a form of payment.  My heart sank as this is the only card that I have.  However, I did find a way around this problem and it required eBay's accepting PayPal as a method of payment. PayPal accepts all cards.  Follow these steps.

1)  Delete your American Express from your eBay account

2) Set up a PayPal account and add your American Express to the "wallet" This is the scetion where you add your card info.

3) Go back to your eBay account and select PayPal as your prefered method of payment.  The easy way to do this is by making a purchase, select PayPal when you are checking out and follow the steps to link your PP account with eBay.

From this point forward, eBay will automatically process your payment through PayPal.

I hope that you find this info useful.  If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Good for you, however eBay no longer accepts American Express so why are you telling us about the features of their prepaid card outside of eBay?

Re: eBay's discontinuation of accepting American Express as a form of payment

Why are you saying PayPal is not a monetarily good decision for sellers? That makes no sense because PayPal does not send a PayPal payment to an eBay seller. eBay puts the buyer's payment in your checking account and there is no fee except for the standard eBay seller fee based on the category you listed the item in.

BTW, closing your PayPal account does nothing for a seller because eBay offers PayPal as an accepted form of payment. It doesn't matter if you have a PayPal account or not.

I always pay with PayPal because of the added layer of protection with PayPal. Using PayPal you have 180 days of protection instead of  30 days eBay MBG.

For me I use my Amex cards (Gold and Everyday) more than any other card I have, and that will not change. For EBay seller's it means far less business from me.

No other major retailer is having this issue with Amex, many have negotiated terms with Amex.

The reality is EBay is nothing special any longer.

I do not use PayPal.  My account was hacked and they did not help me.  I contacted them several times! After several weeks I filed my complaint with American Express, that was my card on PayPal acct.  The problem was fixed with AE.  I just won’t be using eBay .

I had a bad experience with PayPal years ago.  Someone used my account.  I disputed the charge.  I even contacted the seller.  PayPal was unable to help me after several weeks.  I finally went to American Express, my card on PayPal.  They corrected the issue.  PayPal sent me a nasty reply for taking my issue to AE.  I never used them again.

You have like 50 transactions in 26 years.  I think eBay will survive without you.

Re: eBay's discontinuation of accepting American Express as a form of payment

Even easier........I have a savings account and use it exclusively for PayPal purchases. If I want an item that is more than I am willing to spend at the time I use PayPal credit that gives me 6 months no interest. When I pay PayPal it tells me how much to pay to avoid interest. As long as I pay at least that amount I'm can pay on time with no interest. Easy.

If you link a gift card (I have an Amex gift card) to Paypal or Venmo, they then charge me 3%, which is pretty crappy of this enormous company to do.

Re: eBay's discontinuation of accepting American Express as a form of payment

I have just simply quit using e-bay! I'm not going to be forced to open another account somewhere just because they don't want my American Express. I used my Amex specifically for e-bay because I didn't want my other cards on-line for security reasons.  Why use PayPal? Makes no sense! Amazon accepts Amex! That's where I shop now! Maybe when e-bay loses millions; they, will start accepting Amex again! Until then, I will not purchase anything from them.................

Re: eBay's discontinuation of accepting American Express as a form of payment

People don't want their bank cards "ON-LINE" some American Express cards are cash loaded and can have a controlled amount to avoid scammers wiping out their card. Unlike bank accounts. Once the transaction is completed, the process of getting your money back is extremely difficult and near impossible.

Until you get scammed.

I guarantee a bank fights harder for their money than your money.
