eBay Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number

Forcing you to give your checking account with routing number and Social Security number . I am not a big seller I just sold a few things I never used that I had then eBay locked my account AFTER selling some stuff saying I had to update my account. I refused to give my private information. I called eBay and of course I was tossed around from one person to another. I asked them why PayPal doesn’t ask you that kind of private information they allow you to use your bank card like a credit card and do two small deposits with one withdrawal to verify. If you are a business they only require your EIN number.  Never do they ask you for your private information. Brittany from eBay the last woman I was talking to said well PayPal is a Financial company and a eBay is a market place. Ok so that supposed to make me feel comfortable giving Them my private information? That is supposed to tell me it’s Secure to do so? I had to ship the stuff I sold to the people because I’m not a jerk but eBay won’t give me my money. I told Britney I was deleting my account she sent me the link. Once I know the people received what they purchased ( because I’m honest)  and want to make sure they got it even though it cost me money. I WAS a victim of fraud twice. My SS# was stolen and it ended up freezing my tax returns and the second time I had my bank account drained. I was told by the police to NEVER give your SS # out other than in person and never give your routing # out unless it’s in person or a government site which have very high security and Only if you need to exp: direct deposit tax return. I have never given it out since. There is NO good reason eBay needs that. They have documentation they took the sales tax out. Personally I think anyone that got ripped off by eBay and they will not give them their money back need to get together and sue eBay.

This is so sad. Nope. I just ended all my listings. I loved ebay until this inssuportable decision of theirs. I'm actually surprised this hasn't made national news there are so many subscribers that are affected. I just was listing a few household things since my husband passed.  Also enjoyed browsing and buying some specialty items. I was just shocked ebay thinks they could do this. That's why we have cc and paypal which already has  all the info neccessary.  Bye Bye ebay, it's been fun 😪

@pekeu23

I'm very sorry to hear about your husband.  I can't even imagine how though this must be for you.  I mean that sincerely.  I wish you nothing but the best.

Ebay is the LAST of the bigger sites to do this.  All the other ones have had their own payment processes for years.  This isn't national news because it isn't an unusual move in the industry.

I believe things can still be purchased in the usual manner (cc or paypal) as a guest but not if you have an account.  Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nothing changes for buyers.  They can purchase with PP if they want to.  The only change for buyers is they now have two more options on how to pay.  Google Pay and Apple Pay.

MP only affects sellers.  Even if a buyer pays with PP, the money for the seller will go into their MP account.

I am going to start selling through Bonanza and Facebook market place. I don't trust Ebay to adequately protect this kind of information. Paypal has a proven track record.

I've been screwed by them enough siding with buyers that are clearly in the wrong.

This is the next big hack waiting to happen.

As does Ebay.  They have been protecting our information for over 25 years.  And yes they have had financial information to protect for many years.  Lots of sellers have checking accounts, credit cards, etc. on file with Ebay not just for a back up funding source, but to auto pay they Monthly Seller Invoice.

How Ebay processes or handles INADs, returns, is a completely separate issue and has nothing to do with MP specifically.  That problem existed before MP and continues to exist once we are in MP.

I wish you nothing but the best in whatever you decide to do.

No other selling venue that I know of requires a SSN. Regardless, eBay is only asking for the last 4 digits.

They have to if you are sell enough to receive a 1099K.  They have to have our SSNs for those.  So while MP is no longer asking for the full SSN at sign up, if a seller gets close to the thresholds for a 1099K, MP is going to have to come back to the seller and require the full SSN.

Poshmark, Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Etsy, et al do not require SSNs when joining or selling. Please cite me the proof.

They will have to if your sales gets close to meeting the threshold for a 1099K.  It is unlikely that any of those sites would want to be responsible for the penalties IRS would impose on them for not following the Federal IRS rules for a 1099K.

You stated "when joining", my post you are responding to did NOT say that.

I'll never sell anything again. There is no way that I'm connecting eBay direct to my bank account.

I am a constant eBay buyer and an infrequent eBay seller.

But, I have no intention of providing eBay with my BANK ACCOUNT information or my SOCIAL SECURITY number. Their reasons for making the change from PayPal to eBay are just simply to harvest increased revenue and data from customers. NO WAY. I will utilize other sites.

Revenue yes, data no.  The data they need is required by what they are doing in MP.  It isn't there just to collect information.  Without your banking info they can't get your money to you.  So without it your money would just forever sit in MP.  I don't think that will work very well.

As for your SSN, they only require your last 4 digits.

Have you ever written a physical check to anyone?  If you have, you give away your bank routing number and your bank account number each and every time you do that.

FYI bank routing numbers are public information.  No secrets on these numbers.  Anyone can get them anytime they want them.  Many banks state their routing numbers on their websites too.

A number of ebay policies have driven me from selling over the years. This is just another one. I just don't want to give ebay my checking info. If they don't care about my business as a casual seller then so be it. We part ways.

- Guaranteed 30 day refund was the worst policy that drove me away as a casual seller. I was burned by a buyer when they lied about an item. ebay forced the return and made me pay return shipping!

- because of this 30 day guarantee, on a recent sale I had to let the money sit in  PayPal until the 30 days were up.  In the meantime eBay took out their cut. They don't wait 30 days.

- Retail stores don't give you 30 days to return an electronics item. Yet eBay expects you as a seller to do so.

- Not a fan of taxes being collected for old items that have been taxed already. We the people are being nickeled and dimed to death.

@samsmoke

Most sales don't end up with a return.  If they did there would be no reason for any of us to be here much less the site itself.

Ebay's return policy has been in much need of revising since the moment they changed it it October of 2018 to Simplified returns.  But since most transactions don't end up in a return, it is only frustrating on a fraction of our sales.  And although it seems like it is a "guaranteed 30 day refund" that isn't exactly how the policy reads or is applied.  It is hard and next to impossible to win an INAD, but sometimes upon appeal this is reversed if the seller has enough evidence.  And the INR seller protection is VERY good.

If you want to hold Ebay's feet to the fire and hold your own money for 30 days because of how the process INADs, then you should consider the PayPal policies too.  PP allows a buyer SIX months to file a claim.  So should you be holding the money for six months?

Return policies for retail stores vary, even on electronic items.  But if the buyer pays with a credit card, then they can go to their CC and file a claim for up to usually around 90 days, sometimes a little more.

Taxes have NOTHING to do with something Ebay imposed.  They are just doing as the various state LAWS requires them to do.  As will all other large marketplaces like Ebay.  They do it because it is the LAW.  Ebay fought long and hard for YEARS in an effort to prevent internet sales tax.  If it wasn't for Ebay's efforts we likely would have had this in place years ago.  So maybe you could consider a thank you to Ebay for this.  I know I do.
