Why does eBay need my social security number when they could easily send me a total amount of sales

I have signed no contract with eBay, only agreements to their terms of operation.  Without a contract, there is no basis for a 1099 to be issued, nor is there any reason to supply eBay with a social security number.  eBay is performing a service for me, and I pay them for that service.  Logically, I should be creating a 1099 for eBay.

When eBay sends me a contract, I will hand it to my lawyer and my tax preparation representative and then, and only then can two parties be distinguished.  One party hires and fires (me), and one performs a service (eBay).

"I'm not a tax dodger, I'm a citizen who knows the law, and the lawmakers are putting one over on you.  They have no right to employ eBay to reveal your personal transactions.  If anything, you should be sending eBay a 1099 for the services they render, but for no logical reason should eBay be making money off of revealing what is private, your finances.  You pay eBay, they are not your employer."

Where did you attend law school?  Or have any formal education in The Law?
Or are you one of those self-taught citizens "who knows the law" ??

Y'know, like from hours and hours reading statutes and cases in a law library?
Maybe you had a lot of free time to read legal textbooks in, say, a correctional institute?

I submit that you do not fully understand Form 1099-K, its history, its purposes, what becomes of the information reported on it, or much of anything else about it.

News flash:  eBay does not "reveal your personal transactions" by means of a 1099-K or any other report or communication.

With Form 1099-K eBay "reveals" to the IRS only -- no other governmental entity -- your "finances" as they pertain to sales you made on eBay's platform.  That's all.

One point you do understand correctly:  eBay is not your employer.

If eBay were your employer, they would have to report the income they pay to you on Form W-2.  The original of that document goes to the Social Security Administration.  You receive a copy of it, and you will attach that copy to your federal tax return, Form 1040 or the appropriate version.

You think you know the law but you don't.

Effective June 27th  2023, the INFORM Consumers Act requires

online marketplaces to collect, verify, and disclose information about high-volumn third- party sellers to enhance transparency and consumer protection, deterring the sale of stolen, counterfeit, or unsafe goods.

Big Brother is watching you!

I'd be more concerned Elon Musk has access to everyone's social security number than eBay.
