Why are so many charging $9 for shipping jewelry

Shipping for jewelry is getting crazy-$9-$10 when first class is only $4. What’s up with this now?

Maybe the seller thinks it's for Priority or maybe since it's jewelry, it includes insurance.

Guess the seller could just toss in a padded envelope and ship for your price. Would you be happy with a crushed, broken piece on arrival? Hopefully at that shipping price, it is better packed. Remember, no one is twisting your arm to buy. If you don't like the price, keep looking.

with USPS the way it is: as a seller why would I risk loss, or major delays on first class:

Priority it be.....even then it might not get there....

Maybe they charge $9.00 because by the time they pay $1.13 on the  eBay shipping fee, $1.00 for the padded envelope or box, and $2.00 handling they are left with $4.87 for postage. If they buy First Class  postage at the PO it costs between $4.30 to $4.75 depending upon what zone the buyer is in for the lightest weight package. That doesn't include insurance. Maybe they are using the handling fee to pay for insurance.
