Using person checking accounts for payments will end small sellers using ebay

I have been buying and selling on ebay since 1998.  I do not have a business that sells on ebay, I just sell the occasional item like my kids' used musical instruments.  I am currently trying to list my daughter's French horn which is about $2000.  I discovered that the only way to get paid now is to provide ebay with my checking account.  That will never happen.  Requiring bank account information will kill individual sellers on ebay.  When I am on ebay trying to buy something, I am looking for an individual selling items they no longer need.  I am not looking for a company selling their products as a business.  I currently have a balance of less than $100 because a couple of months ago I sold a difficult to find Vitamix switch.  It sold but that money is sitting in my account with no way to get it.  I can't use it for credit on any purchases and ebay will not put it in PayPal.  Clearly ebay is trying to merge into an Amazon model and get away from people like you and me buying and selling their stuff.  I hope ebay reverts back to the previous model and allow small sellers to continue.

eBay has many small sellers. They just went an opened up a separate checking account.

You can just open a separate account only for ebay.

Over 75% of Ebay's active sellers are small sellers.  There are about 19 million active sellers on Ebay worldwide.  About 18 million of those sellers are now using Managed Payments.  So while you may believe it will stop small sellers if they have to use a checking account, clearly the numbers don't support that.

Those are statistics from before eBay changed the rules.  Individual sellers will not get a separate bank account to sell one item or even a few items. The whole point of eBay in the beginning was to allow people to sell their stuff, create a marketplace to sell used items from individual sellers.

Those are old statistics, before the recent change to require every seller to use a checking account to get paid.  No individual seller is going to provide their personal checking account number to ebay to sell one item.  No individual seller is going to go down to the bank and open an account just to sell their one item.

You say, "doing well". By saying that you are referring to sellers trying to run a business, not individuals trying to sell their kid's old bike or outgrown clothes, or some other item that they no longer want. I am referring to these people which were the backbone of ebay in the beginning and are now disenfranchised. My point is that no one will go down to the bank to open a separate checking account just to sell their kids old bike or in my case their kid's unused French horn.  They also won't provide their personal checking account number unless they are really reckless with their personal information.

If they use a separate checking for ebay, they are not the individual sellers I am referring to.  I am referring to people that sell less than 10 items a year, more like 1 or 2 items a year, getting rid of kids old toys, old musical instruments, or whatever.  These people will no longer sell on ebay.

That's THEIR choice! ....

and using eBay in that manner is generally a waste of time, unless the items being listed have significant value. Otherwise utilizing other selling methods would be much wiser option.  LOCAL selling would be more beneficial, more profitable and a whole lot easier to accomplish! eBay is hardly worth the effort for that kind of selling, unless there is significant value in the items being listed.

"sell their kid's old bike or outgrown clothes, or some other item that they no longer want."

that's the type of items to sell locally NOT on eBay!

No they are not.  Ebay just released their 3rd Quarter 2021 financial numbers last week.  These are about as current as you can get.

While there may be lots of sellers that may not want to open a separate checking account for their online sales, that would be a choice for each seller to make no matter their size.

@darrenli1984   My account has been in Managed Payments for over a year ... aside from 6-8 times a year when they hold my Payouts for an additional week the system works fine.  I set up a separate checking account with a separate bank JUST for eBay's Managed Payments.  That has worked fine and separates the money nicely.  The vast majority of Sellers are not the large ones you are eluding to, they're Sellers just like you and me ...

Re: Using person checking accounts for payments will end small sellers using ebay

I am no more worried about eBay having my checking account number and last 4 of my SS, then I am about any auto-pay accounts I have, or my insurance company, or utilities that I pay online from saved information.

Even if a sale did go north, I would still have to cover it  anyway, so what difference would it make where the money comes from? Don't matter if PP or MP, that cloud has been hanging around for more than a few years with refunds and returns.

Yes if someone were to look at my current sales history, they would see I have not sold anything in a while. Right now, most of my stock is just too large to ship or is too common to be worth the time selling in the (formally) vintage car parts category. So no, unless I go really big time selling, I am not going to open 2ed checking account to sell a few items a month.

Small seller here:  When I opted-in to the MP system over a year ago, I used the same account that was attached to my PayPal.  Instead of transferring money from PayPal once a month, the money is put into my account weekly.  I have had no problems.   The debit card attached to this account is what I use for eBay purchases.  It's a great system.

Sounds like you are running a business on eBay, not what I am talking about.

Bottom line, if you are selling on eBay, don't matter if you are signed up with a business account or not, and does not matter how many items you sell or how often, any selling on eBay considered to be a business transaction.   Income needs to be reported no matter the level as well. There is no such thing as a hobby seller, really never was. If selling here does not work for you, there are other sites that may be better suited for you. Yes, I too liked PP, but that ship has sailed.
