Did you mean:

Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Made offer on item. No response, or counteroffer from seller. Got message from  eBay within 24 hrs of offer notifying me that credit card charged.  Been eBayer for last 20 years with outstanding feedback from sellers. No authorization was ever given to eBay for automatic payments from credit card.  Evidently there is no way for members to opt out of these automatic payments. This is a set up for serious problems and legal action, not to mention buyer reluctance to participate in future transactions. rafeit

If it was just an offer, not a purchase, what would you be paying for?

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Were you asked to verify your payment method before the system allowed an offer be made? (I've heard of that happening to some.) If so... does the item show up in your Purchase History? Maybe there's reason to be happy that you bought the item for your offered price. Fingers crossed for you... 🤞

It means the seller accepted your offer.  Your card was charged and you paid.  Look at your purchase history.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Previously seller would communicate with buyer that offer was accepted, or make counter offer. Either way, buyer would then be directed by eBay to proceed with payment and confirm shipping address. That is not the case now. EBay has changed payment policy (without advising members), now using an automatic payment system which is certain to create problems for both sellers and buyers.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

This is a new feature that eBay is starting due to so many non paying buyers.  As a seller, it is frustrating to accept an offer only to have the buyer not pay right away.  In the meantime the item could have sold at full price.

From eBay payment policy:

“When you're ready to pay, simply go to checkout. You'll be able to select your payment method and review your order details, including your shipping address, before you pay.”

Clearly no longer the case when offers made on items and accepted by seller.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

If that’s a seller’s concern don’t post “make an offer.” Auction buyers don’t necessarily pay on time either, but they still get to see cost details (tax, adjusted shipping charges), can choose payment options and shipping address before making payment.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

I've  known about this for at least a year.

In Buyer Payment Requirements in Buyer Management  your seller has checked the box that says

Require buyers to provide a payment method before they make an offer.

*Currently, this impacts only a small group of buyers.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

I am alarmed by this automatic payment change.  I made an offer today and when I checked back saw I had automatically paid for the item as the seller had accepted my offer.  This is the first time this has happened to me as a buyer.  When I win an auction at the close I am quick to pay.  However this auto payment without my approval is disturbing.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Whenever you make an offer, that means that you want the item at that price.  So it was accepted and Ebay automatically charged you.  So what is the problem?  Did you change your mind?  Did you want some time to change your mind?   Again, if you do not want this to happen, do NOT make an offer until you are willing to pay for the item too.  Does it matter if ebay charged you rightaway?   Don't take it like if ebay does NOT trust you. This is something that ebay is trying and frankly, I like this policy.  They should also automatically make the winner of an auction pay at the time the ad ends.  Too many deadbeats.  NOw before I get bombarded with responses, I am well aware that buyers often want combined shipping and want to buy another item from that seller.  Ebay then needs to make it easier for the seller to combine the 2 (or whatever purchases) into a combined shipping charge and refund the difference.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

They're just doing what other platforms like Mercari do and making you agree to the payment before you make the offer so you're automatically charged if they accept. It's not sketchy they're just changing their rules because of how many unreliable buyers don't see offers as an actual binding contract and back out after an offer is accepted, putting the seller out.

Congrats on getting your item for your first offer OP!

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Let me make this simple.

I see nothing "disturbing".

I see nothing "without your approval".

You provided the payment information.

You made the offer.

The offer was accepted.

Your payment method was charged.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

When you signed up with Ebay, you agreed to ebay policies. One statement inbedded in there is "that Ebay has the right to change anything anytime."  So you actually agreed to this years ago.   If you sell, you will agree that this is a great policy.

Re: Unauthorized use of buyer credit card by eBay.

Under federal law unauthorized use on one's credit card is fraud.  Look it up, 1026.12(b)(1).  eBay has no right to establish a policy or agreement outside of legal parameters.  That is what is defined as an unconscionable agreement.  No court will support such a disregard of integrity.
