Payment sent to wrong bank. How to recover?

Hi everyone, 

Need help with a tricky selling / payment deposit issue. 

I recently made a sale on ebay and the funds were sent to the bank account I have on file. After a few days of not seeing the payment in my checking account, I checked the transaction and saw that the account # of the deposit was right but the bank name was incorrect. Ebay sent my deposit to a bank with a very similar name in a neighboring state, but this bank has a different routing # and I do not have an account there.

Ebay customer service recommended checking if my bank received the ACH deposit. They confirmed that they did not. I also called the wrong bank that ebay sent the money to and they said they have not received it. They said the payment should be rejected due to wrong routing # / account #, so it won't show up as a pending ACH. 

Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before? Assuming the wrong bank rejects the deposit, will the money go back into my ebay account? How can I ensure that ebay is making the correct deposits so this doesn't happen again?

1) We know eBay transfers money using the routing number, not the bank name

2) The OP stated that they looked up the routing # on the bank website and provided it to eBay

3) Somehow, the funds were sent to a bank with a "very similar name"

Most likely situation: the OP was on the wrong website when they looked up the routing number, and didn't notice since the bank name was "very similar" to theirs. This could easily happen if they did a Google (or other) search and clicked on the first match without looking closely.

Nothing sinister; no one at eBay changed their bank info to send the money to the wrong bank; just user error.

You need to contact Mp immediately to get the issue resolved.

I experienced it today.   Still waiting for an answer before I close my account.  eBay could give a **bleep** if you get yours so long as they get theirs.

They can only go by the information you give them.  If you provided and incorrect routing number or an incorrect CHECKING account number, then you need to get that corrected.  I understand you are upset, but you need to look to what you provided to them as they don't just create your information.

If Ebay were a fly by night corporation I could agree with you.  But if they are doing as you suggest, there would be signs of it by now [26 years or in the 3.5 years that MP has existed].

So go to your Seller hub.  Hover over the Payment tab.  A drop down menu will appear.  Select PAYOUTS.  On that page is a list of all the Payouts that have happened on your account.  On the far right side of the screen is a transaction number for each of those PayOuts.  You can give that number to your bank and they can track down the deposit.  That number is an ACH number which is part of the banking system.  If you call your bank and they say they can't track it, ask for someone else as they most certainly can.

Then how did the club I just purchased two days ago get debited from the correct account, but the clubs I sold last week get credited to the wrong account?  How does that work?

When you are acting as a buyer, it does not connect to your selling account information or your MP account in any way.

MP is for seller's only and is where your money is processed. 

So buying and selling are two completely different functions.  And processed differently too.

A routing and account # together is like a phone or IP address.

Very specific.

I am not a expert on this, doubt anyone else here is either.

I think it can be resolved.

As stated, contact the MP customer service, your bank, and the mistaken bank.

Hopefully someone can put it on hold, and it can be fixed.

The account that gets "free money" has responsibility not to spend this and question why it happened.

Not free money for them.

Ebay doesn't just choose where to send your payment, it goes by what you have entered into your account.  Even a one character difference can cause you issues.

I'm unsure of what you mean by you have been Ebaying with the same account for years.  Are you saying you have been in MP for years?  Or did you have your checking account connected to your Monthly Seller Invoice to pay it?  Other than that, Ebay wouldn't need your checking account number.

Now of course if you have this issue now, the important thing is to get to the bottom of it and get the problem fixed.  

In your Seller Hub, hover over the Payment tab.  From the drop down menu click on the last option which is Payment settings.  Verify that everything is correct.

Then go to the Payout reports that are under the Payment tab.  For each Payout that has happened, once the ACH banking system receives the payout to be process the bank assigns a tracking number which can be seen on the right in the MEMO column.  Write down that number, contact your bank, give it to them and have them track down your deposit.

If none of that bares fruit for you, then you will have to contact Ebay to fix your issue.  Good Luck.
