Payment defaulted to an expired card, will payment switch to valid card?

I was checking over the details of a recent order, which is listed as paid and has a delivery date, when I noticed I had been charged on an expired debit card.

In the Fees & Billing section of the on-site FAQ it states, "... if your payment is unsuccessful, eBay may attempt to charge another on-file payment method."

I'm aware that's in reference to seller's fees specifically, but this also true for buyers? Will eBay charge my active card when a payment can't be processed from my expired card?

If so, that might explain why the payment wasn't rejected outright.

The payment policy you referenced is only for sellers to pay seller fees. Your payment may get kicked causing you an unpaid item.

Curious, why would you leave an expired credit card on file?

Rude, you don't know why they left expired card on file. Not everyone pays for eBay stuff daily or even monthly.
